To Summarize...CBHC Holiday Party 2012 by: Shelly Terruso, Executive Assistant to CEO
The festivities are put to bed, but the New Year still shines! Let me take more than a moment to thank our CEO, Jay Glynn for his never ending support in giving us the opportunity to ring-in our holiday party every year... thank you Jay. And to our Marketing Director, Jessica Boles, your creativity and enthusiasm in planning this event is unsurpassed. Creating the party with you through heart & soul, is something I look forward to every year.
It was a real joy to see so many of our CBHC Family & other important members & supporters of our agency at the holiday party this year! We received so many positive, heartfelt expressions, as well as some great new ideas! We thank you for sharing the night with us. Funny how we can let loose & show our playful side with a few "cool" dance moves & even forgive stepping on each other's feet to jump start the laughs! Ok, in our own minds the moves are cool. J
Let me give some gooey compliments on the food. Here goes... Is there any better? Brian & Gina... you are all heart & soul. The meal was flawless. Watching you work is inspiring. Both of you are the essence of what the holidays are all about & could easily teach others how to enjoy the spirit of the season. You make the party complete & there wouldn't be a party without the love & care you put into every bite. Let us not forget Gina's "MC" talents! Right on Gina!
Jessica & I were exceptionally delighted to hear all of the "ooohs and aaaahs" while staff entered the hall! Yes, we agree! We wanted staff to feel spoiled, warm & fuzzy for their night of merriment! Let us not forget to give credit where credit is due here... huge expressions of gratitude to Kathy Smith, Lee O'Flaherty, Julie Greaves & our Maintenance Dept. for the enormous amount of help & donations that we received. No event gets done without those that help so proudly & unselfishly.
There aren't enough hours in a day to express how fortunate we feel to have such compassionate, supportive & genuinely caring staff. The holiday party is part of thanking all of you for being there for our clients, our agency & for just being the great people that you are every day.
For those staff that were unable to attend or that missed it for circumstances beyond their control, let me just say that you were greatly missed.
And to sum it up... Until next time... Have a beautiful, joy filled holiday season & let's dance on into 2013!!

CBHC 2nd Annual Toy Drive
Charlotte Behavioral Health Care (CBHC) hosts its 2nd Annual Toy Drive for children seen at the agency in response to the urgent need of struggling families. Toy donations directly impacted underprivileged children, many with mental illnesses and other behavioral needs, currently receiving services from CBHC. The agancy provided a new toy to 188 children this year and a total of 140 families.
Toy donations will alleviate pressure on families that would have had to choose between purchasing holiday gifts and necessary staples, such as food. CBHC employees are pleased to support the agency toy drive to benefit children whose families may have limited resources this season. The toys will be distributed throughout the rest of the month to the children that are in need.
"Our Staff, CBHC Board of Directors and the Fred Lang Foundation Board really pulled though this holiday season and we are proud to have collected over 200 toys for our 2nd Annual Toy Drive here at the agency", states Jessica Boles, Director of Marketing, "Our goal is to deliver, through a new toy at Christmas, a message of hope to our children that will motivate them to grow into productive and responsible citizens and leaders in our Charlotte County community."

HIPPA
by: Chris Gentry
As some of you may have read Coastal had a very serious HIPAA breach. Consumer names, phone numbers and addresses were stolen from their facility. When there is a theft of this magnitude you must make notification to consumers who were affected with letters to each consumer and a media release. This disclosure of consumer information made me very concerned about who and what types of reports are used in this agency and where they go and are they safe. Penalties for Noncompliance with HIPAA can be:
For wrongful disclosure of Individually identifiable health information a fine of up to $50,000 an or Imprisonment for up to one year.
For wrongful disclosure for commercial advantage personal gain or malicious harm a person may face one or both of the following: fine of up to $250,000 and or imprisonment for up to 10 years.
So as a reminder to all of you,
Please keep all consumer data locked up when not in use by you.
Please do not transport consumer lists in your cars, use these reports in the agency only.
Make sure all reports containing consumer information are properly disposed of, shred bin only.
When working at or from home, please do not print client lists with service dates, names, phone numbers etc.,
Remember to secure your laptops do not leave them in your car, do not leave them unattended.
Please remember not following HIPAA rules could cause us very serious fines and other consequences. Please make yourself familiar with the following policies all found under Administrative: Management Information Systems MIS-002F, Human Resources HR 100-037, and Medical Records MR 100-020.
I will be doing closer monitoring of what is being left on desk and in office's and group rooms so expect to see me visiting your areas in the next few weeks and months. I want us all to be guardians of the consumers information.

FL Announces Ban on Synthetic Drugs
Getting high legally may not be legal anymore. Tuesday, Attorney General Pam Bondi issued an emergency rule. The state is banning 22 more synthetic compounds used to make products like bath salts and K2. Synthetic drugs are leaving their mark on our communities.
"According to the Drug Abuse Warning Network report, more than 11,000 ER visits nationwide involved a synthetic product in 2010," said Bondi. Poison control centers say the use of bath salts alone has increased by 20 times since 2010. It's become the second most commonly used drug in high schools across the nation.
Though it's marked as incense, when smoked they produce hallucinations seizures and even death.
In Florida, officials are fighting to keep up with the dangerous drugs.
Already, 100 ingredients have been banned; now, 22 more deviations have been added to the list. In the Cape, we found a few gas stations still selling it. But others in Fort Myers cleared the shelves before police even asked. Collier County commissioners are following in the state's footsteps. It's moving forward on an ordinance to ban the sale, possession and distribution of synthetic drugs.

EXPRESS YOURSELF
I have encouraged consumers to give us feedback by allowing them to fill out a form I developed called "Express Yourself". This is done periodically in the morning community group. Express Yourself gives great feedback to me.
The Express Yourself seems to be good for both consumers and staff. Consumers perceive staff and management as concerned about what they think and say. Staff like it because they sometimes get kudos from me because of what consumers are saying about them.

Kudos, News & Congrats...
* I just wanted to give a BIG THANK YOU to everyone that gave a toy, donated money and helped wrapped presents for our 2012 Toy Drive!
We collected and wrapped over 200 gifts in our Toy Drive and we are going to give 188 kids seen here at the agency a brand new toy for Christmas.
A special thank you to Santa's elves: Julie Greaves, Shelly Terruso, Kathy Muccio, Nancy Albright, Kathleen Simpson, Tina Narr, Eleanor Cronin, Krista Pawlowski, Dana Calcagno, Derek Rogers, Keith Callaghan, Khalilah Williams & of course...our wonderful Maintenance department!
Thank you again for all of your hard work and thoughtfulness.
Happy Holidays,
Jessica
One of the teachers from East Elementary called a couple months ago because her students were participating in a contest for decorating wreaths as part of their "Leadership" focus in class. She asked if they could donate it to us because this is where the kids wanted it to go :) I of course, said yes and passed it along to the Recovery Center. This was a true leadership effort on behalf of the kids at East Elementary School.
Thank you!

Praesto Employee
Rico Laguerre Lead BHT CSU (1st shift) has been proudly nominated for this month's Praesto recognition for the outstanding job he does in his work with the consumers, staff and maintaining a safe and therapeutic environment at the CSU. Rico Laguerre you are being recognized for setting the standards and showing exceptional dedication with effectiveness and innovation in your position as a Lead BHT.
Rico was born in Brooklyn, New York and moved to Port Charlotte when he was 8 years old and was attracted to his current work for "I was between jobs and my family suggested I re-apply at CBHC since I enjoyed working here so much". Ricohas been working in the mental health field for 4 years and considers his biggest strength in this field as "Being able to show compassion to people without any bias". Rico feels thebiggest challenge in the mental health field is "The lack of resources in the community to aide the mentally ill". Rico states that the most rewarding about his job is "Seeing the staff assist people at their lowest point and watching the client build themselves back up after staying here at the CSU just a few days" and what makes it all worth while? Rico states "The camaraderie". Rico's biggest turning point in his life was "Finishing my bachelor's degree 1 year ago". Rico's philosophy of life is "Live life to its fullest and push yourself to the limit". Rico is involved in "Strong relationships within the Haitian community and churches" and considers his kids and the New York Knicks as his hobbies. Rico reports his method for keeping a healthy work/life balance is "My family". Rico feels that the most critical problem faced by people in this field is "I do not think lawmakers understand the necessity for our programs and what the implications are in regards to financial cutbacks". Lastly, the one thing that most people don't know about Rico is that "I speak Creole fluently with out ever visiting Haiti.
Thank You to Rico Laguerre, Job Well Done!
Below is one employee suggestion with its response in red. Please note... some suggestions are of a confidential nature, so they will not be posted within this format. Suggestion: Department: Administration. I think the Agency should do random drug tests on the employees. Response: We have seen this suggestion ongoing & it's quite troubling. We ask that employees raise their concerns with their Manager (or) our Human Resource Director, Julie Greaves. We want to ensure that this type of concern is addressed quickly & with care. As a reminder... CBHC's Drug Free Workplace Policy is based on reasonable suspicion versus "random" drug testing. The policy is attached for your review. Note: The employee suggestions are only reviewed twice monthly during the Executive Team Meetings. Suggestion: Kathy Smith: TFC/Dietary. Please furnish & install: Bike Rack at Bldg. B to be used by consumers and staff using bicycles as transportation. This will keep the bikes off of the sidewalk and/or tied to various trees, etc. Response: Love this idea. Approval has been given to install bike racks at Bldg. B., as well as Bldg. A.! Suggestion: Department: Administration. (NOTE) There were 2 very similar suggestions of a confidential/sensitive nature on 11/5 and 11/20. Response: The 2 suggestions will be reviewed & a response will be sent out at a later date. Thank you again for your suggestions!
