Douglas Kauffman, PhD
Douglas Kauffman, PhD
Associate Chair for Education, Department of Surgery, Boston University School of Medicine
    

Dr. Kauffman graduated cum laude from the University Of Minnesota Institute Of Child Development with a BA in Child Psychology. He obtained an MS in Educational Psychology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and a PhD in Psychological and Cultural Studies: Cognition, Learning, and Development also from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.


Most recently, Dr. Kauffman was a tenured Associate Professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Prior to that, he was an Assistant Professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln; Assistant Professor of Education at Eastern Connecticut State University; and Assistant Professor of Measurement and Research Methods in the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Oklahoma. 


Dr. Kauffman's research interests include instructional innovations designed to improve students' learning, cognition and self-regulation in complex learning environments. In his role as Associate Chair for Education, Dr. Kauffman serves as a faculty member in the Department of Surgery, with specific responsibility for the development and administration of educational programs offered by and within the department to medical students, other professional students, surgery residents and department faculty and staff. His research agenda will include efforts to improve the efficiency and efficacy of our teaching and learning, thus advancing the field of Surgical Education.

Associate Professor of Surgery, Boston University School of Medicine

 
Dr. Schulze is a graduate of Boston University (BA, MA, MD). He completed a residency in General Surgery at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in New Brunswick, NJ, and a Fellowship in Trauma and Critical Care at the University of Maryland in Baltimore, MD. In addition, Dr. Schulze completed a research fellowship at New England Deaconess Hospital. 
 

Dr. Schulze was most recently Director of Surgical Nutrition and Surgical Critical Care at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY and Attending Physician of Surgery at Kings County Hospital Center also in Brooklyn, NY.


Dr. Schulze has authored and co-authored numerous chapters and scientific publications and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the American College of Critical Care Medicine. His research and clinical interests include surgical education, ARDS, advanced ventilator management, sepsis, pre-hospital trauma care and violence prevention programs.

Attending Surgeon, Division of Podiatry Surgery, Boston Medical Center

Instructor of Surgery, Boston University School of Medicine 

 

Dr. Volansky received his doctor of podiatric medicine from New York College of Podiatric Medicine in New York, NY and completed his residency at Long Island College Hospital, Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY.


Prior to joining BMC, Dr. Volansky was an Associate Physician at Manhattan Footcare in Brooklyn, NY and held faculty positions at New York College of Podiatric Medicine in New York, NY and Lincoln Hospital in Bronx, NY.


His research and clinical interests include: podiatric surgery; diabetic foot care; dermatology/pathology; and biomechanic analysis/sports injuries. Dr. Volansky is a native of Ukraine and has been in the United States since 1997.

Stephen Brooks, MD, Attending Surgeon, Cape Cod Hospital and 
Clinical Assistant Professor, BU School of Medicine, was awarded the 2014 Volunteer Clinical Faculty Award. Dr. Brooks was selected by graduating Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) students for recognition of his value as an educator to medical students.

 

Tracey Dechert, MDAttending Surgeon, Section of Acute Care & Trauma Surgery, Boston Medical Center and Assistant Professor of Surgery, BU School of Medicine, was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Medical Society in recognition of her outstanding advocacy and mentoring skills and her personal commitment toward creating a positive learning environment for BU School of Medicine students and by serving as a role model for personal integrity and accountability. Membership in AOA-the only national medical honor society-recognizes the highest level of excellence in scholarship, leadership, professionalism, and service. BUSM is one of the 120 chapters in medical schools throughout the Unites States.
 
Gerard Doherty, MDJames Utley Professor and Chairman, Department of Surgery, BU School of Medicine and Surgeon-in-Chief, Boston Medical Center, has been installed as President of the American Association of Endocrine Surgeon (AAES). He will serve as President through 2015. Click here to read more.

Donald Hess, MDChief, Section of Minimally Invasive and Weight Loss Surgery, Boston Medical Center and Assistant Professor of Surgery, BU School of Medicine, was awarded a Collaborator of the Year Award: Clinical Collaborator for his work with members of the Department of Medicine in studying the physiology and biochemistry of obesity and weight loss. Jeffrey Kalish, MD, Attending Surgeon, Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery and Assistant Professor of Surgery, BU School of Medicine, has been chosen as the recipient of the 2014 E.J. Wylie Traveling Fellowship from the Foundation of the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS). This award will allow Dr. Kalish to visit the three U.S. military centers specializing in amputee care: Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, the Center for the Intrepid at San Antonio Military Medical Center, and Naval Medical Center San Diego to witness not only the surgical management of complex war wounds, but also the progression to prosthetics training and rehabilitation. The award will be announced this June during the Awards Ceremony at the Vascular Annual Meeting in Boston.
 
Karl Karlson, MD, Chief, Division of Cardiac Surgery and Assistant Professor of Surgery, BU School of Medicine, was awarded a Collaborator of the Year Award: Clinical Collaborator for his co-leadership of the Evans Center Affinity Research Collaborative ARC on Nanotheranostic Platforms for Cancer and Vascular Disease.
