Welcome to the twefth issue of the AIS News & Notes.  Please let us know what you would like to see here.  And if you have notes you would like to add, or you would like to become a reporter, please let us know!  You can contact either Bob Pries or Wayne Messer with your comments or interest.

We Need Your Help

Hopefully you have already seen the most recent issue of Irises Bulletin with the Survey asking for your help.  We would like to know if your club's needs and strengths have changed, if your club has used some AIS provided features, if you have access to the AIS electronic services, and what the AIS can do for your club.  There are also opportunities to share your opinions.  The survey is completely anonymous, but we would like to know your region and affiliate.

Note:  While they ask about your club, they would still like your participation even if you are not a club member.

To make it easier to participate in this survey, we have the link you need.  All you need to do is click here.  Thank you for your help!

AIS Digital Programs and Slides

AIS Digital Programs and Slides coordinator reminds you there continues to be slide programs available to those affiliates who do not have the equipment nor access to view digital programs.

HIPS Rhizome Sale and New Look for Website

The HIPS (Historic Iris Preservation Society) website has a new look and another great reason to check it out now!  This is when they have their rhizome sale - June 1 through 30 - and it is open to members and non-members.

You can see the website here and follow the links to the sale.  Be sure to read the directions on how to order.  And if you want to start with the list of rhizomes for sale, here it is.

Congratulations to HIPS on their updated website!  Be sure to see all its features.  And, if you are not already a HIPS member, this is a great time to consider joining.  Follow this link to learn about all the membership benefits.
AIS Photo Contest Deadline

The 2014 AIS Photo Contest is underway and the deadline is approaching - June 30 midnight is when your entries need to be there!  Details can be found on the AIS website here.  The entry form (PDF) is also available online.  Good luck to everyone.

And for inspiration, you can see winners from previous years from the links on this page.
Growing National Collections - How You Can Help

Earlier we talked about the Gardens Web section of the Iris Encyclopedia which includes a list of Iris National Collections.  Under this is a Putative List of Gardens that are seeking to create particular iris collections which could become National Collections.  And they need your help!

You can find one of these (well, 5 actually) in Charlie Carver's article "Preserving Small, Historic Irises" in the Spring 2014 Irises Bulletin.  He closes by asking for your help, both in irises you may be growing and in suggesting sources of particular irises.  And in referring him to sources of historic information about these irises.  His desired acquisition lists were too lengthy to include in the article; so, now you can find them in the Iris Wiki here.  They range from MTBs to TBs; so, whatever your bearded interest, you may be able to help!
Spring Irises Bulletin Available

The Spring 2014 Irises Bulletin came in the mail shortly after the previous News & Notes.  So you should have yours already.  Andi Rivarola has more information on it in the World of Irises blog.

You can see it online with your Emembership by going here (username and password required).  You can learn more about becoming an Emember at the end of this newsletter.
New Iris Encyclopedia Feature

When you go to the Iris Encyclopedia (also known as the Iris Wiki because you can edit it), you will now see a Lost & Found button.  This is a place where you can ask for help finding irises or let others know you have rare irises you are willing to share.  There are already some requests.  See them and add your comments here.

You may also notice that the Iris Wiki is again fast.  We recently upgraded the software so it is now more responsive.
Historic Iris Jigsaw?

Another Noid jigsaw puzzle for your consideration.  This came from a large clump - 30+ good sized rhizomes - at an apartment.  No identification.  I planted over 20 rhizomes and only this one bloomed this first year.  I suspect it is historic not because of where it was but from its appearance.  Also pbf at the base of the fans.  It appears to be a TB.

Can you help identify this purple iris?  Here is the puzzle.  Please send your suggestions to wrmesser@gmail.com   Thank you for your help.
Become an Emember

If you are already a member, you might consider adding an American Iris Society Emembership.  This is a way for you to show additional support for AIS.  For just $15 a year, in addition to your regular membership charge, you have online access to Irises, including all the back issues of it and the AIS Bulletin, the Registration & Introductions database, and you help to support our online initiatives!  Find out more here.  And you will qualify for the AIS Voucher Program described in earlier issues.

The Emembers Login link can now be found in the Quick Links in the left column.  You will need your username and password which comes from the AIS Membership Secretary (aismemsec@irises.org).
