Find It On The AIS Website

The American Iris Society website has information on irises, Iris Societies and Affiliates, iris awards, and almost anything about irises and the people who love them.  Sometimes it has so much it can be difficult to find what you are looking for.  Well, now the website has a way to search it!  On the front page, right hand side, is a Search AIS Website link.  It takes you  here where you can enter your search term(s) in the box.  Also check the search tips on the same page.  To see more about searching, check this page in the Iris Encyclopedia.

The tall bearded irises eligible for 2013 Wister Medal
The tall bearded irises eligible for 2013 Awards of Merit
The tall bearded irises that won 2012 Awards of Merit
The tall bearded irises that won 2012 Honorable Mentions

Ballots and instructions are available on this pageYour selections need to be to your RVP by September 1st, either by email or regular mail.

2014 AIS Calendars Are Available

The annual Iris Calendar from the American Iris Society is now available.    And you can order it online through the American Iris Society Storefront.  Learn more about the Storefront and what it offers on the AIS website.  You can click on Our Products in the left menu to see all the products or go directly to the individual 2014 Calendar page or the 2014 AIS Calendar Package of 10 page (both are for US locations).   Note that the prices shown in the Catalog include shipping, which is different for US, Canada, and Overseas.  So for Canada and Overseas go down the list to the Canada entries and then the Overseas entries.  While in the catalog, check out the other items available!

Do You Have Videos of the National Convention?

In your trip to the AIS Spring National Convention, did you take videos of any of the gardens or other events?  We would like to prepare short videos showing the beauty of irises.  If you have any or any parts of videos you would be willing to share, please contact Wayne Messer.  We would also be interested in videos from other Iris Conventions, Meetings, Shows, Gardens, or anything featuring irises!  Thank you for your help!

Reblooming Iris

It's that time of year for many of us.  If we want to see irises, rebloomers are what to look for.   Betty Wilkerson shares some of her rebloomer breeding approaches in Breeding Reblooming Irises: An Eye to the Future-1 in the AIS blog World of Irises.  This is an opportunity to learn more about how a hybridizer thinks about reblooming and to see pictures of some of her seedlings!  For those of you who would like to explore more about rebloomers, the Reblooming Iris Society is a Section of the American Iris Society.

Have You Seen AIS on Facebook?

The American Iris Society uses a variety of ways to communicate with its members and others who may be interested in irises.  Publications include Irises - The Bulletin of the American Iris Society (which is also available electronically to Emembers).   There is also the AIS website, the World of Irises blog, and the Iris Encyclopedia.  And you can also follow AIS on Facebook!
This is another way to find out what is happening and to see great pictures of irises!  And to see it you do not have to be a Facebook member; just go here.  Of course, if you are a Facebook member, you can also share your lovely iris pictures.
Iris Scorch - "New" Research

Iris scorch has long been a problem whose origin was unknown.  In a 1971 publication that was not well known, Scorch Disease of Rhizomatous Iris by J. C. Bald implicated the Pseudomonas bacterium which causes scale tip rot of lilies.  More recent work did not support the earlier conclusion:  Pathogenicity of Pseudomonas gladioli pv. gladioli on Rhizomatous Iris and Its Possible Role in Iris Scorch by A. I. Wrobel, J. E. Watkins, and D. H. Steinegger, 1992.  What do you think?

AIS Voucher Program - With Added Notes

(We mentioned the AIS Voucher Program previously; but, were remiss in not telling you who the participating iris nurseries were.  We've added that link at the end.)  There is a $25 voucher for irises for members who upgrade their membership and for new members.  Hint: Use this to help obtain new members for the Membership Contest described in the previous News & Notes!  Full voucher program details can be found here.  And the list of participating iris nurseries - with links to their websites - is here.

Become an Emember

Have you considered becoming an American Iris Society emember?  This is a way for you to show additional support for AIS.  For just $15 a year, in addition to your regular membership charge, you have online access to Irises, including all the back issues, the Registration & Introductions database, and you help to support our online initiatives!  Find out more here.  And you will qualify for the AIS Voucher Program described above.
