FeatureFeature Story: Overcoming Obstacles on the Path to the Tyler Rose Half

Liza Autin, a busy mother of 2, knows it can be difficult to get around to accomplishing your personal goals - but she did just that. This past September Liza, alongside one her good friends, Carlie, decided to take up running.  Although Liza was already living a healthier lifestyle, having taken off 65 pounds, her next challenge was to run a marathon.

The pair began training for the Tyler 10k race, taking place on March 23 on the beautiful Azalea and Spring Flower Trail. Neither women were runners,so the Marathon was going to be a tough goal to reach. Their training regimen consisted of waking up at 5 a.m. to run together 3-4 times a week to prepare for the big day.

Months of training finally paid off when Liza and Carlie ran their first ever 10k. Both were elated and decided to pick up a small run the following weekend. But everything came to a halt just days before the race. Liza suffered a torn meniscus - a very common knee injury caused by forcefully twisting your knee while your full pressure is applied on it. Liza's injury came out of nowhere; she was standing in her kitchen and made a quick turn then felt pain. Unable to walk, with her knee swelling, Liza immediately feared the worst.

Deciding the best action would be to see a doctor, Liza made an appointment at Azalea as the pain continued. Luckily she was able to see Dr. Ken Kaminski, a knee and hip surgeon at Azalea Orthopedics who diagnosed her with a torn meniscus, recommending 4-6 weeks of recovery time, during which she would have to refrain from running. He assured her that most cases of torn menisci do not happen during athletic activity, but rather unexpectedly, similar to her twist. Because Liza was in good shape her case did not require surgical repair, and she completes physical therapy as well as daily exercises working the muscles behind and on the sides of her knee to get her strength back.

"I've always had great experiences at Azalea Orthopedics," says Liza. "I was upset to miss the fun run but plan on being recovered and ready to compete in the Rose Half Marathon this coming October."

Liza is following Dr. Kaminski's orders and anticipates slowly getting back to her new found hobby.
Keep an eye out for Liza at the Rose Half-Marathon and congratulate her on overcoming the injury!

AskAsk the Orthopedist: Dr. Kim Foreman & the Azalea Team Provide Answers To Your Orthopedic Questions

Ask the Orthopedist allows anyone to submit orthopedic questions online to have them answered by Dr. Kim Foreman. Below are some recent questions we have answered:

Question:

I was working out on the elliptical machine over a week ago, shortly after I had minor pain (4 of 10) in my right ankle and a "squishy," "squeaky," feeling and sound when I extended/retracted my ankle. I went to the doctor and he said it was a 1st degree sprain so I rested, iced, compressed and elevated the ankle for a week and was feeling great - no swelling or pain. However, in the past day or two, the squeaky/squishy sound has returned and I feel a minor rub against my ankle. I have experienced no pain or swelling. What could this be?

Answer:

Sounds like tendinitis, or more specifically, tenosynovitis - inflammation of the lining around the tendon.  Heat and an anti-inflammatory (Advil, Aleve, ibuprofen, etc.) should help.

The Patient's Right to Choose

Getting the highest quality orthopedic care should be easy. It is, but only if you ask for it. At Azalea Orthopedics, we want you to have the care you deserve. That's the reason we want to make sure you ask for Azalea Orthopedics by name when visiting your family physician or any area emergency room.

Intentionally or otherwise, patients of some providers are being misled by statements such as "Not in our network" or "Your doctor is not available". Azalea physicians are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. When you go to the doctor, the emergency room or any other medical facility, it's your choice who treats you.

Recent new health care legislation may lead many to assume that they do not have a say in where they are treated. That is not the case. You are free to choose, but in order to get the quality care you deserve, you must ask for Azalea by name.

We accept most major insurance companies including Blue Cross and Blue Shield.
