Did you know? To withstand the landing weight of a fully laden jumbo jet, commercial airport runways are between two and four feet thick, usually with layers of concrete. Taxiways are often less thick, around 18 inches of asphalt.(dsc.discovery.com) |
Special Opportunity
In October the Western Washington University SAE race team had a unique opportunity at the airport to work with Ian Ashley, former Formula One driver, Formula 5000 champion and competitor to James Hunt and Niki Lauda (he's featured in the credits of the new movie Rush). Over the past decade it has become increasingly difficult to find locations to test vehicles and to train drivers. Both of these tasks are critical in the team's mission to educate students about how to design and build the best possible advanced vehicles. With help from the airport, meeting the team's mission is still possible.

Toys for Tots Run
On December 7 the Arlington Runner's Club hosted their annual Toys for Tots Run. The event raised some substantial and helpful money which Toys for Tots put to good use. A little cold weather did not dampen the spirits of 208 runners and their friends and families who showed up to end the 2013 Arlington Runners Club season and kick off the 2013 Christmas season. Project Updates
Taxiway Alpha Lighting Project: The contractor has had issues with material delivery for the project and the estimate for commencing the project was December 2. Considering the shorter winter days and the potential for weather delays, staff, our engineers, and the contractor decided to postpone the start of the project to mid-February 2014. This will allow the contractor adequate time to obtain all materials and will result in fewer delays once the project is underway since work will occur during longer periods of daylight. As February approaches we will keep you informed of the project schedule. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
J Hangar Restroom: The J hangar restrooms are currently being remodeled by the airport maintenance crew. The work should be completed within the next few weeks. The airport would like to give special thanks to Ron Moen and Marysville Taping for donating material and the work to install the walls in the restrooms. Ron was also able to work with Building Specialties and get the company to donate the sheetrock in the restrooms. Thank you Ron!
Airport Boulevard/51st: Is complete and now open. The road connects 172nd Street and 188th Street NE. The thoroughfare was officially open for traffic on November 15 with a ribbon cutting ceremony.
173rd Utilities: You may have noticed work being done in the field next to 172nd and 51st. Utilities are being installed for the future 173rd street. 173rd will connect Smokey Point Boulevard to 51st street.
Building 77B Renovation: The airport owned building currently occupied by Sound Auto and Arlington Auto Recycling has a new roof, doors and siding. The project should be concluding shortly with only punch list items remaining.
 | After many years of service 2 airport trucks are being replaced with Ford F-150's. The new equipment is a welcome site to the airport maintenance crew. |

Cyclocross
On November 23, 2013, more than 500 racers and their friends and families gathered at the Arlington Airport for the 2013 Washington State Bicycle Association Cyclocross Championships. The top three finishers in 29 different categories were crowned with bronze, silver, or gold medals. Racers ranged in age from 6 to 60-plus and came from all areas of Washington and even northern Idaho. Clear and cold conditions greeted racers, who navigated a challenging course located on the north side of the airport, consisting of pavement, wet grass, forest paths, and a couple of steep run-up and descending sections. In addition to an exciting day of racing, the event was a fundraiser for VetBikes, an organization that provides bicycles to Puget Sound military veterans to help facilitate their path to wellness (see www.vetbikes.org). The competition was sponsored by Jamis Bikes and Bikesport and made possible with the support of the City of Arlington and the Arlington Airport.
