With our fall seasons underway, I wanted to send a short note to thank everyone for their participation in and support of the Crew Youth system! As we enter our sixth year, we are extremely encouraged by all of the progress and success at every level in our model. Below are a few highlights from summer 2012:
Our three Home Grown players on the professional Crew roster (Aaron Horton, Matt Lampson and Ben Speas) have found success recently. After Aaron and Ben both scored goals vs. EPL side Stoke City, Matt made his MLS debut in a 4-3 win over New England and followed that up four days later by playing the entire match in a 2-1 victory at Philadelphia.
A number of our Crew Soccer Academy alumni are succeeding at the highest level of collegiate soccer:
- Matt Wiet is a senior captain, three year starter, and pre-season First Team All American at UCLA
- Wil Trapp is a sophomore starter and pre-season First Team All American at Akron
- Chad Barson is a senior captain and four year starter at Akron
- Andy Lubahn is a senior captain and four year starter at Wake Forest
- Justin Luthy is a senior captain and four year starter at Boston College
Recent US Youth National Team success:
- Ben Swanson joined the U17 YNT residency program in Bradenton, Florida this fall and is the number two prospect in the class of 2016.
- Wil Trapp has been a constant in most U20 MNT camps and competitions over the last year, including a trip to Northern Ireland for the U20 Milk Cup in July
- George Braima captained the U14 YNT in their July camp and has been invited back to the next U15 camp
- Moussa Sy and Luis Hernandez were called into the U14 YNT August camp
CSA enjoyed tremendous success at the U17 Generation adidas Cup in Seattle, a top level MLS only event.
- 3-0 in group play, tied Toronto 1-1 (didn't advance on PKs) in the semis and a 3-2 win vs San Jose in the 3rd place match
- Nate Kohl won the Golden Boot with 6 goals in 5 matches
Crew Juniors U19s won USYS National Championship (the McGuire Cup) for the second time in three years on July 28th in a match broadcast live on Fox Soccer Channel.
- Wil Trapp scored the game winner in the 2-1 comeback victory
- Matt & Will Walker were named all-tournament, Jeff Gal won the Golden Gloves and the team won the Fair Play Award
Crew Super 20s advanced to the USL National Championship for the third year in a row - after winning the 2010 and 2011 championships, the 20s were upset by the Chicago Fire 3-1 in the final.
Four Crew Juniors teams qualified for the USYS National Championships:
- Crew Juniors U19 Champions
- Grand Rapids Crew Juniors U18 (defending national champions) National Finalist
- Challenger Crew Juniors U15 National Finalist
- CUP Crew Juniors U15
Certainly some very exciting moments for our entire youth system - with one more to come early next week! Please mark your calendars and plan to join us Monday, September 10th at Ohio State's Jesse Owen's Memorial Stadium at 7:00 pm as our Crew Soccer Academy plays the U17 Men's National Team. This will mark the second time in three years that we have hosted them, so the level of respect that they have for our system is clear - that our own Ben Swanson will hopefully be on the field with the U17s makes it even more memorable.
Again, thank you for your commitment to the Crew Youth system - we look forward to great things at every level during the 2012-13 seasons!
Best regards,
Andrew Arthurs
