Building a Better Book Club: 
Enhancing Your Discussion
There are lots of great ways to get the discussion going on book club night. Here are a few ideas of things you or your group members can do to spark conversation on book club night.
Use a Prompt
Use an object related to the story to start a discussion. Objects like maps, photographs, paintings, food, clothing, or music help create a sense of place. Has anyone in your group ever been to the setting of the book? Ask them if they can bring anything from that locale.
Pick a Passage While you are reading the book, note any passages that stand out to you as being particularly meaningful. Is it important in the context of the book as a whole, or significant for you personally?
Consider a Char
acter Discuss a specific character from the novel, aspects like character traits, motivations, their influence on the story's events and characters, significant quotations, character development, and the important question: could you relate to them?
Use Your Background
Is there anything that you, uniquely, can bring to the discussion? Have you ever worked in a field relevant to the novel? Have you ever shared similar life events to the characters in the novel? What insights and perspectives can you share?
