Cumberland Community Action Program's CEO, Cynthia Wilson recently received the 2013 ATHENA Award presented by the Fayetteville Cumberland County Chamber of Commerce.
The ATHENA Award recognizes the person who has demonstrated excellence, creativity and initiative in their business or profession; provided valuable service by contributing time and energy to improve the quality of life for others in the community and actively assisted women in realizing their full leadership potential.
Wilson received this award because of her ability to foster a continuous learning environment within an organization of 300 staff members, her leadership and guidance for a CCAP program that provides job readiness training for women entering or re-entering the business world and because of her ability to develop and implement strategies that sustain high service delivery when faced with a $430,000 budget cut.
Wilson's dedication to helping those in need in our community through her visionary leadership continues to set the bar for other nonprofit leaders.
Congratulations Cynthia!

Celebrating Patricia Tyson's Years of Service
 | CCAP Chief Executive Officer, Cynthia Wilson (left), and Doris Ann Shipman, CCAP Board of Directors (right), wish Patricia Tyson well in her retirement. |
During January, CCAP celebrated the more than 25 years of dedicated service of Patricia Tyson. On January 17, CCAP and CCCS staff, board and volunteers gathered to wish Tyson well in her future endeavors.
Throughout her tenure at CCAP, Tyson was instrumental in establishing Consumer Credit Counseling Service, the ASPIRE program, the Weatherization Assistance Program, and CHDO. Most recently, Patricia held the title of CCCS Director. In every role Tyson held at CCAP, she applied her unique education, skills and experience to make CCAP programs increasingly successful each year.
Tyson will continue her work in the community, serving on multiple boards, and will be performing consulting work in the future.

Head Start Earns "Partner in Prevention" Designation To Protect Children
CCAP, Inc's Head Start has achieved "Partner in Prevention," a nationally-recognized public standard to end child sexual abuse (CSA). The designation was awarded for Head Start's commitment to protecting children by training over 90-percent of its staff and volunteers to how to prevent, recognize the signs and react responsibly to CSA. "Partner in Prevention" was created as a national standard to help parents and caregivers recognize organizations who take CSA prevention seriously by implementing policy and training staff. The training and designation award is provided by Charleston, SC-based Darkness to Light (D2L). D2L has championed the movement to end CSA since its founding in 2000 and now has education programs in 49 states and 15 foreign countries. D2L's training curriculum points out that CSA is pervasive in a society where it is repressed and not discussed. Thousands of organizations across the U.S. and Canada are now seeking out a dialogue for prevention and they are sending parents and the community a message with the Partner in Prevention distinction. To learn more about CSA prevention training or to enroll your organization in D2L's "Partner in Prevention" program, please visit www.d2l.org. Please also contact D2L Program Coordinator Erika Rowell at 842-965-5444. About Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) Crime and behavioral studies have long cited CSA for its devastating impact on society. Statistics are startling, according to the Fourth National Incidence Study of Child Abuse & Neglect: - 95% of abuse is by someone the child knows and trusts.
- 73% of children don't tell anyone until well after the abuse has occurred, if they tell at all.
- Statistically, approximately 500,000 babies born in the U.S. each year will be sexually abused before they reach age 18.
- In the U.S. alone, there are an estimated 42 million adult survivors of child sexual abuse.
- CSA is linked to a host of social issues including teen pregnancy, psychiatric disorders and substance abuse.
- CSA ranks second to murder as the most expensive victim crime in the U.S., where costs exceed $35 billion annually.
