Letter From The Director
L. Ron Pringle

Dear Friends:

What if all you could think about was how hungry you are? This morning, while you are pouring your organic granola, listen carefully to the clinking as it hits the bottom of your empty bowl. For many in our area, that sound echoes deeper than you and I may realize. For the more than 23,000 households served by Second Harvest Food Bank of Southeast North Carolina each month, the sound of food filling a dish is hope for a better day.

One of our strategic focuses at CCAP is addressing food insecurity, hunger, in the communities we serve.  The projects of Second Harvest Food Bank of Southeast North Carolina reflect some of the multiple ways we work to address hunger.

Fortunately there are many, many people who care about workers who are temporarily down on their luck.  And I should emphasize that the data shows that folks who need this help do recover and move forward in life. I've seen it many times myself-and in all likelihood you have as well.  In fact, a study a few years back by the Urban Institute in DC found that approximately 50 percent of individuals who find themselves in a poverty situation get out of poverty a year later; and 75 percent experience poverty spells of less than four years.

More is needed for the families we serve and those affected by recent political, social and economic changes; and more is exactly what we intend to do. It has long been said that it takes a village to raise a child. What we know is that it takes a village to create real, meaningful change. Community Action changes people's lives, embodies the spirit of hope, improves communities, and makes America a better place to live. We care about the entire community, and we are dedicated to helping people help themselves and each other.

To change this village, we need your help. Join us in this fight against hunger.

We encourage each member of this community to help however they can. Volunteer. Advocate. Donate. Or simply become more educated on the issue of hunger in our community by viewing our documentary available at hungercantwait.org. And let us know what you think and how you can help.

The Second Harvest Food Bank of Southeast North Carolina (SHFB SENC) is in line to receive a $2,000 donation if the food bank can add 1,000 "likes" to its Facebook network before year's end.

The opportunity has arrived because the N.C. Pork Council (NCPC) and The Food Effect website have launched a month-long campaign to raise awareness about childhood hunger, strengthen the social networks of North Carolina's seven Feeding America food banks, and raise up to $14,000 in donations for the food banks.

13 SHFB Member Conference

On November 14 Second Harvest Food Bank hosted the second annual Member Agency Conference. This year we had over 220 individual attend. The purpose of the conference is to get all member agencies together to discuss the various changes and challenges pantries are faced with. It also gives the Food Bank the opportunity to educate everyone on various topics, including collaboration, healthy tips and grant opportunities.

Many thanks to Alan Briggs of the NC Association of Food Banks and Ivy Murphy, NC Department of Health and Human Services for participating.

Mt. Sinai Mobile Food Pantry
Mt. Sinai and Second Missionary Volunteers
Second Harvest Food Bank, Florence Rogers Charitable Trust, Food Lion, Second Missionary Baptist Church and Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church join together to fight hunger

The Second Harvest Food Bank of Southeast North Carolina's Mobile Food Pantry Program recently leveraged support from several partners to rapidly respond to those in need in Fayetteville.

Recently, SHFB received $25,000 worth of gift cards from Food Lion in $5 increments. Last week, 300 of those gift cards were distributed during a mobile food pantry at Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church off of Murchison Road, along with more than 10,000 pounds of food.

The event assisted approximately 1,307 individuals who otherwise would likely suffer from hunger.

The drive was so successful, not only because of Second Harvest Food Bank, the Florence Rogers Charitable Trust, and Food Lion, but because of the 108 volunteers from Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church and Second Missionary Baptist Church that came out to show their support.

For more information on how you can help or to host a mobile food pantry, please visit us at hungercantwait.org or call (910) 485-6923.
