fam9Family of 9 Loses Everything Due to a Fire

Family of 9
Williams Family in their new home

The ASPIRE program has a family of 9 who lost everything in a fire the weekend of June 22nd.  We were able to assist them in finding somewhere to live within there budget and assist with clothes.  It was not an easy task.  They had a certain budget they had to stay with in and some of the places refused to rent to them because of the size of the family.  On June 28th, they signed their lease with Fayetteville Properties and received their keys to their new home.

2013 ASPIRE Star Award

Congratulations to all the 2013 ASPIRE Graduates. The ASPIRE Self-Sufficiency Program continues to evolve and progress.  We are in times of uncertainty and the strange word of Sequestration continues to roam about. However, our culture at Cumberland Community Action Program, Inc is to always be in the mode of readiness and expect the unexpected.  We have had bumps in the road but the bumps have become our steps to success.   Our goal each year is to assist our participants to move toward self-sufficiency and independence.  One of our many achievements includes a graduating class of 35 participants.

This year the ASPIRE program enrolled 199 individuals.

They helped 11 individuals rise above the poverty line and assisted 18 individuals move to safe housing.

They issued more than 3,499 bags of food for critical nutritional assistance.

They assisted 36 participants in securing gainful employment.

They facilitated the completion of education or training for more than 50 individuals.

They created a stronger, more secure community and a higher quality of life.

buildingBuilding a Better Me Youth Leadership Program

ASPIRE Youth Leadership
Stephanie Ashley, ASPIRE Director with the Build a Better Me Volunteers

The Building a Better Me Youth Leadership Program in Sampson County was a HUGE success. The purpose of the program was to provide sessions to youth groups about Healthier Eating, Bullying, Social Media, Managing Your Money, Dress for Success, and Self Esteem.

Stephanie Ashley, ASPIRE Director states, "I cannot say how pleased I am with the partnership we formed with Clinton City Schools and Sampson County School.  We had a very short window to get this turned around and we were able to have a 3 day program for 35 children from limited income families. The lunch provided during the 3 days would be the only meal some of the children would receive for the day."

The team Charlotte Murphy put together to run the leadership program was great. They were made up of teachers, bus drivers, and other volunteers.

Not only was this a learning opportunity for the children, but for the instructors as well. They did not understand why we limited the Program to families with children who were at 100% of the poverty guideline.  They now understand the lack of resources for this particular population.  The land mass is so huge for Sampson which makes it difficult for these families to get to the few resources in Clinton. They now want to get more involve in helping the children or children like them.

JROTC
Congratulations to Pine Forest High School JROTC

The Lead2Feed World Hunger Leadership Challenge is a national contest sponsored by USA Today, its subsidiaries, and Yum! Brands. The goal of the challenge is to engage youth and build awareness regarding the issues of world hunger.  We are pleased to announce that the Pine Forest High School JROTC students were awarded 3rd place for their student project submission! The 3rd place prize was a $1,000 donation to their hunger-relief charity of choice, Second Harvest Food Bank.

These students lead and challenged their peers to participate in activities that would directly make an impact on hunger in our local communities. The students collected food and money to benefit SHFB. They also volunteered their time and participated in special events. The students chronicled their efforts in a video submission, along with a music video about taking a standing against hunger.
