VirtualfooddriveConsider Donating to the Virtual Food Drive  Grocery Bag

Saturday, May 11 is the National Association Letter Carriers'  Food Drive. Participating letter carriers will be collecting non - perishable items from residents if placed by mailboxes. If you live in an area where letter carriers are not participating, you can still help by donating to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Southeast North Carolina's Virtual Food Drive.

Help us reach our goal of collecting $10,000 through our 2013 Virtual Food Drive campaign. Achieving this goal will allow us to distribute 70,000 additional meals in our community.

Thankyou    Second Harvest Food Bank Would Like to
As many of you may know SHFB was competing for $45,000 for the kids' backpack program from Walmart. The top 40 food banks would receive the financial support.

Though SHFB did not make the top 40, we wanted to take this opportunity to thank all those who voted everyday throughout the month of April and who continue to show support for our mission of service. Although we did not gain financially in this competition, we have more than doubled our network of supporters, volunteers and community partners. More people in our community have gained understanding about who we are, who we serve, and why what we do is so important. This campaign has been an amazing opportunity for us and we are profoundly grateful for each of you who have joined in this fight against hunger. Even though this campaign is over, we hope that you continue to like us on Facebook and continue to follow our initiatives, there will be plenty of exciting opportunities for you to be involved over the coming months! And, if you are ready to be involved right now, we are always accepting volunteers. Call us at (910) 485-6923 or visit our website ccap-inc.org/foodbank.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for efforts and your continued support.

Financialliteracy
CCCS
Patricia Tyson, CCCS Director holds a class to discuss various service and products that might have hidden fees

April is designated Financial Literacy Month to highlight the need for financial literacy in our Nation.  The complexity of our financial market continues to grow.  In order to produce a fairer financial marketplace, customers must be informed about the products and services they are buying.  Being knowledgeable is our best defense against tricks and traps found in some financial products.  As consumers we are empowered when we know how to side step being misinformed or unaware of the consequences of financial products that we may be enticed to purchase.  This requires more than a transfer of knowledge.  For some, it may require knowledge and developing new skills that are practiced to build confidence.  Others may need to unlearn bad habits.

We can all help by taking a leadership role in spreading the word about the need and benefits of knowing more about money.  So, how can we spread the word?  First start at home by talking with your kids about a family budget.  Encourage them to save some of their allowance each week.  Discuss setting and achieving financial goals.  Invite Credit Counselors or Financial Planners to speak at your church or other civic group meetings.  If you are an employer bring in financial experts to your work site to provide information on retirement and other money management issues.  As your employee's financial situation improves, so does your bottom line. Remember, there are many different approaches to financial education, with many different needs, and many different solutions.

The best place to start is to contact us at Consumer Credit Counseling Service at 910-323-3192.

Weatherization Assistance Program Provides Training to Contractors

WAP Contractors Training
Syreeta Morrisey, Weatherization Project Manager had her monthly Contractor's Training on Thursday, April 25, 2013. Ms. Morrisey reviewed the Heating and Air contractors specifics of the Evaluate, Clean, and Tunes (ECT) that applies to outdoor heating units. Bid solicitations for Heating Air Repair Replacement Program (HARRP) were also reviewed and the contractor's were provided with a list of documents that must be included. Other areas the WAP Project Manager covered were: material sales tax, weekly schedules from structural contractors, permits, venting out fans, and Health and Safety. Danjanette Taylor, Quality Monitor Supervisor, discussed the work orders/invoices, Davis Bacon Payroll, and the OMB1512 Report to the contractor's.

The contractors provided insights on what they were experiencing when working on the homes of our Weatherization clients.

PlanetariumNew PNC Mobile Planetarium Takes Head Start Preschoolers to the Moon!

HS PNC

On March 14, 2013 children from several Head Start Centers joined Elmo, Big Bird and Hu Hu Zhu - a Muppet from the Chinese co-production of Sesame Street - as they explored the night

sky in One World, One Sky: Big Bird's Adventure, a planetarium show created by Sesame Workshop with major funding by the PNC Foundation and other partners. The show travels to area schools in an inflatable dome that provides children with an age-appropriate introduction to astronomy while forging cross-cultural connections.  At the Growing Up Together Under One Big Skymobile planetarium, each child received a day time/night time activity poster, which is trilingual (English, Mandarin Chinese and Spanish) and has reusable, glow-in-the dark stars to display at home.  Many thanks to the PNC Foundation for providing this interactive activity for our children!

David Melvin
Melvin                            In Memory of David Melvin

It is with regret that we inform you of the passing of Mr. David Melvin, a dedicated Senior Aide at the food bank. Mr. Melvin has been volunteering at the food bank for the last 4 1/2 years. Angel Robels, Warehouse Manager at the Food Bank recalls his time with Mr. Melvin by saying, "He was a hard worker, caring, and friendly person. He always got along with everyone and genuinely was a soft hearted man. He had a quiet and shy demeanor, but was a compassionate and considerate man.David was also a sharp dresser and loved the church. He was a devoted Christian and loved to sing and praise the Lord. His favorite song was "Cooling Water".

David's favorite past time was fishing. He absolutely loved it."  Angel recalls telling him to "catch a big fish for me and don't go to WalMart to buy one or to the pet store.  Catch a little one from the fish tank".

All of us here at the Second Harvest Food Bank are saddened by the passing of our co-worker and friend.

He will surely be missed!
