Science Initiative Moves Forward
The "Science Initiative," a project to upgrade our two High School Science classrooms, took a big step forward following a Board of Regents tour of Benson Hall back in September 2011. Walking into the Physical Science classroom with board members, including several alums with distinguished medical careers, brought a rush of memories from all who had enjoyed classes from Mr. Milan Alby during their Oak Grove days. The interesting thing was that the classrooms were largely unchanged from "back in the day" and further investigation and conversation revealed that not everything in the classrooms functioned as well as it could. The vision for upgraded Science classrooms quickly took shape. Fast forward to now a little over a year later and we have reached an important milestone. We have accomplished the first goal of Oak Grove's "Investing in People and Programs" five-year plan, funding the Science Initiative! Thanks to generous support of the Science Initiative we have reached the important milestone of raising $275,000 for the project. Seven donors provided a challenge fund of $134,500 which has been matched by contributions of more than $140,000 from nearly 30 other donors. Planning sessions involving Brian Berg from Zerr Berg Architects, our talented science teachers, and others from our Middle School and High School staff have helped us refine the plan for the remodeling of the classrooms. The goal is to have the project begin shortly after school is out in May with the classrooms ready for use by the start of the fall 2013 semester. There is much talk in the education world about things like STEM education, experiential learning and the competitiveness of our U.S. students compared to their peers globally. We should feel good at Oak Grove about giving our students a strong environment for learning and, soon to be enhanced in the Science disciplines, the hands-on experiences that are so important to help bring the wonders of Science and all its possibilities to life. I've always thought that the study of Science provides a way to see the fingerprints of God in the world He has created, and with the Science Initiative complete those amazing discoveries which will be even more dramatic and life-changing. As plans become finalized we will post project details and design overviews for students and families to review. Thanks to all who have helped make the Science Initiative a reality!

The Honorable Wade L. Webb, District Judge of the East Central Judicial District, served as the University Of North Dakota School Of Law's 2013 Rodney S. Webb Distinguished Jurist-in-Residence Feb. 27 and 28, 2013.
Judge Webb's was a guest lecturer in-law classes, attended informal receptions and individual meetings with student groups, as well as a formal dinner held in his honor. The Jurist-in-Residence program provides a unique and varied opportunity to learn about the bench and adds greatly to the law school experience of the students, faculty and staff.
In 1995, Webb earned his Juris Doctor, with distinction from the University Of North Dakota School Of Law. Upon his graduation from law school, Webb served as law clerk for the Seventh Judicial District Court of Minnesota. From 1996 to 2003, he served as Cass County Assistant State's Attorney, leading the Personal Crimes Team. Former North Dakota Governor John Hoeven appointed Webb District Judge of the East Central Judicial District in May 2003. May 2013 will mark his 10th year of service on the bench.
The Distinguished Jurist-in-Residence Program was established in 2007 to bring outstanding judges to the UND School of Law for an extended visit with our law school community. The inaugural jurist in 2007 was the late Rodney S. Webb, United States District Judge for the District of North Dakota. Through the encouragement and financial contributions of UND Law School alumni and Judge Webb's former clerks, the program has been permanently named in his honor.
