"Shared Values" of Oak Grove
How would you describe the character of Oak Grove Lutheran School?
Are there words and phrases that capture the spirit of the school, words which reflect the school's unique identity and define "the Oak Grove experience"? These were some of the questions behind the goal to draft the shared values of Oak Grove Lutheran School.
Shared values, much like a mission statement, are meant to be timeless in their reflection of the organization's character and culture. When Oak Grove is shining brightest, when we are at our best, the atmosphere and culture that carries us to those heights should be most clearly seen through the shared values.
Oak Grove's Shared Values are: Relationships: We thrive on personal relationships and strong role models, care for each person as a child of God, and together reflect a spirit of accountability, trust and respect. John 13: 34-35; Galatians 5:14; Galatians 6:9
Community: We grow as a community that welcomes new people and ideas, supports each other as members of our family, and continually renews our legacy as part of God's unfolding plan. Colossians 2: 6-7; Hebrews 10:24-25
Character: We challenge each other to be people of strong character, well-grounded morally and ethically, and confidently live out God's call to show honesty and integrity in all that we say and do. Ephesians 1: 17-19; 1Timothy 4:12; 1 Peter 4:11 Courage and Curiosity: We encourage courageous exploration and development of our God-given gifts, driven by a curiosity to discover and experience broad and unique opportunities, and commit ourselves to life-long learning and growth. 2 Timothy 1: 6-7; 2 Timothy 2:15; Hebrews 3:6 Faith and Reason: We embrace the intersection of faith and reason through rigorous pursuit of knowledge and understanding while seeking to know and trust in God's creative power, His revealing word, and His saving grace. Romans 12:2; Hebrews 6:12; Hebrews 11:1
Service and Leadership: We transform ourselves and the world around us by loving and serving our neighbors, showing compassion and empathy to all, and being leaders who imitate Christ in our thoughts, words, and actions. Mark 9:35; Mark 10: 42-45; Philippians 2: 3-8; Hebrews 6:10

Mission Trip Highlights! In November, several Oak Grove sophomores and juniors embarked on a mission trip to Hidalgo County in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas. Their experience was amazing and they would like to thank the entire Oak Grove community for their support and prayers. Here's are some highlights that deeply affected students on the trip: Exploring the River Walk and The Alamo in the beautiful city of San Antonio. Eating AMAZING authentic Mexican food. Touring the Ozanam Center in Brownsville, a refuge for immigrants and homeless families. They did some work there as well. Taking part in the teen service worship, where they sang bilingual songs! Grovers performed a skit for the children and then made necklaces, bracelets and drew pictures. One day we headed out to what seemed like the edge of the earth, to an impoverished community north and west of Mission, Texas. Very eye opening. Students cared deeply about the work they were doing, and approached their work as if it were their home and how would they want it to look?"
They learned to sheet rock, mud and tape seams and corners of a house for a family.
Seeing the families' faces when they walked through their houses being built was very rewarding. The students had an itinerary of what the trip should look like, but that itinerary changed according to how the Holy Spirit wanted the itinerary to look. Bob Noel, Director of Student Leadership firmly believes this as he met with a neighboring pastor while there and she shared her ministry and how committed her church is to helping the children of their community to break the cycle of poverty through education and hope in Christ. She asked if our students would meet with her youth and discuss life.
And the bus ride was a great bonding experience for all of us!
The devotions were so wonderful while there, the students seemed to love speaking about their experiences and worshiping our awesome God!
