Send your prayers along. While in Texas the students will learn about border issues, assist three families in improving their housing, and work with the Ozanam Center, a home that has historically housed refugees from Central America, and currently serves as a refuge for the homeless population of South Texas. Students will also have the opportunity to work with Project Arise. Project Arise is a program that serves impoverished families in South Texas as well. Thanks to the Oak Grove community for their support and please remember to keep these young people in your prayers while they are on this mission trip. |

"Investing in People and Programs" is in full swing this fall with a 5-year plan
One way to describe what has been happening at Oak Grove over the past few months is "a quiet launch with a powerful impact". The catalyst for the changes across the campuses of Oak Grove Lutheran School that started last spring and are in full swing this fall is a five-year plan called "Investing in People and Programs", also known as IPP. IPP was adopted by our Board of Regents in May, 2012 and has already driven important changes across the campuses. The main goal of our five-year plan is to give more students a reason to attend Oak Grove and give all our students a reason to stay.
Some but not all of the important changes put in place for the 2012-2013 school year include:
- Expanding the principal and counseling roles at the Elementary School
- Adding Art classes to every Elementary classroom experience each week
- Hiring a Middle School principal and a second 6th grade teacher, arranging for daily Middle School "team time" for the entire faculty, and dedicating nearly all Middle School staff to our 6th, 7th, and 8th graders
- Hiring a Director of Service Leadership and recommitting ourselves to student mission trip experiences each year
- Enhancing our course offerings in the High School with additional course electives such as Novels/Speech, Creative Writing, Photography, 21st Century Leadership, and Spanish 3
- Adding English Language Learner (ELL) classes to better assist our international students
The above changes jumpstart our five year plan and serve as important drivers in our goal to attract and retain more students. "Science Classroom Initiative" In addition to these curriculum and staffing initiatives, we have very important work to do to upgrade our science classrooms in Benson Hall and provide more resources for our Middle School science classes. We are working to raise $400,000 before January 31, 2013 so that the classrooms can be upgraded, remodeled, and properly equipped for the start of our 2013-2014 school year. We currently have matching gifts that total $150,000 so we are well on our way, but we could use your help. If you would like to participate and support this initiative please contact Jeff Conant @ 373-7149 or email him at jeff.conant@oakgrovelutheran.com. He will be happy to answer any questions as well as help you get involved.

Oak Grove is involved in a number of co-op sports with other
schools. These types of partnerships allow students to take part in sports where numbers at Oak Grove alone would have made participation in a sport uncertain. By entering into co-ops with other schools we assure our students the opportunity of participating in most sports.
Shanley assesses a $150 co-op fee per sport, which is billed to each family through Oak Grove's Business Office. Any questions concerning co-op sports in which your student would like to participate can be addressed to the Head Coach of each sport, Get more information and Shanley schedules at www.easterndakotaconference.org.

Middle Schoolers learn the importance of serving...
On Tuesday, September 25, Oak Grove's middle school students completed a service project. They assisted members of the extended Oak Grove family with raking and window cleaning. In addition, students who remained on campus help prepare for homecoming by cleaning windows and picking up trash. A special thank you to parents and staff that help with this opportunity.
Oak Grove was blessed with almost $3,500 given in honor of Victor Johnson's 90th birthday to be used in our band department.
In honor of Victor Johnson's 90th birthday, his son David and daughter Paula, planned a party for family and friends in the Mount Vernon, Washington area. They also suggested that any monetary gifts given in honor of Victor's birthday would be going to Oak Grove Lutheran School in Fargo, ND. Victor attended OG in 1938 for just his sophomore year. This was the only year he was able to attend but he said having chapel every morning at 10:00am had a decided effect on how he was to structure his life. It was only one year, but a year he has always remembered. And he often shared with pride his year at Oak Grove with his family and friends. 74 years later Oak Grove was blessed with almost $3,500 given in honor of Victor to be used in our band department as band was an area that Victor really enjoyed when he was a student. Victor and his wife Ann enjoyed 64 years of marriage and celebrated their anniversary on October 16, the same day that Ann passed away while in the arms of her loving husband. Victor received many cards referring to Ann as a very special lady. What a blessing...Ann was married to a very special man.
