This weekend marked a smokin' hot first camp session at Heritage Prairie Farm and congrats to all my recruits for an awesome outdoor effort.

This time of year means a lot of running around for women: kids are home from college, younger ones are going to and from camps and sports, there are family visitors as well as vacation plans and it typically falls on you, so it's important to take time out to breathe. I've got just what you need in this week's yoga classes with a simple meditation to nurture and listen to the wisdom of your heart.  See Yoga this Week to learn how and why meditation helps and join me for a physical practice with Therabands -- great for helping all the muscles used in boot camp (i.e. -- all of them - it's Total Body!) and for non-campers who are looking to get relief for nagging issues such as tight IT bands, shoulders, neck pain and more, band work works!

Say, ahhhh... I was personally reminded of the value of meditation when faced with a surprising and long (almost 3 hour) dental procedure last week.  As a teacher working frequent 10 hour days my jaw can often take as much of a beating as my body. I certainly didn't relish the expereince especially on a boot camp week when I'm shouting commands to a new squadron. However, due to my yoga practice, I was able to put myself into a trace-like meditative state using ujjayi breath, relax my jaw and body to the point that the time flew and Ididn't notice the discomfort. Not only was my dentist surprised at how well it went, but afterwards her assistant asked me for help with hand and finger pain and remarked that the simple stretches I showed her gave her immediate help with circulation.  

Meditation will sooth you no matter what comes your way and the time on your mat may bring you surprising relief...just when you need it too.  I hear this from students time and time again.

Regarding Camp, personally, it was my most rewarding mission this Saturday.  Maybe it was the fact that the 90 degree temp didn't keep my gals from showing up and doing all that they could do like champs, showing that age is just a number as long as you eat right, stay fit and hydrated. Maybe it was that its JKFY's 10 year celebration and we sure did!

After watching this video Isabella told her mommy, "That's my Nana!" with a source of pride. 

You never know who you will influence by your efforts to stay fit. Take time out to exercise and care for yourself and try a challenge like my camp.  While it may be one hour away from a family event, game or activity, a camp could be the way you show that special child in your life you want to keep showing up for them for many years to come by living and celebrating a long life!

THIS WEEK'S IMPORTANT FEATURE
The Importance of Staying Hydrated in Summer.  Surprising -- and Important - Facts!
Water really is the key to weight loss and good health. It's estimated that 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. Water makes up 70% of our muscles and 75% of our brains. It's not surprising, then, that lack of water can cause us to slow down-mentally and physically. 

If you feel the need for a midday nap, it can be that lack of water is the reason. And you might be surprised to know that even mild dehydration can slow metabolism as much as 3% (a good thing to keep in mind if you're trying to lose weight). Water also improves muscle tone. You can lift weights but if your muscles aren't getting enough water, you won't see the tone you want.   A somewhat common  client concern is if they drink water while exercising there are bathroom breaks during training.  So what?! What is really happening is as you continue to give your body water it needs, it detoxes out what it doesn't, like the water it's holding in reserve in your ankles, hips and thighs, and maybe even around your belly. Your body figures out it doesn't need to save it anymore, and you will literally flush out your system and become the healthy person you were born to be. 

More on water helping metabolism:  One of your liver's main jobs is to convert stored fat to energy through the metabolism of fat. The liver also "picks up slack" for the kidneys, which need plenty of water to work properly. If the kidneys are water deprived, the liver has to "fill in' lowering its total productivity. This means fat isn't metabolized as quickly or efficiently, and you store more fat when you are water deprived. By drinking enough water, you'll also notice a decrease in your appetite, possibly right from the start. Recent research has shown that those who drink water while exercising have longer, stronger workouts too. Not to mention water is the best beauty treatment. If flushes out impurities in your skin, giving you a glowing complexion, making it look younger and plumping sagging skin as it becomes hydrated.
