Myself at age 3 a happy little cycler!
I've loved to bike and it's been a joy of mine since my early years of bike riding trips with my mom. I often suggest this cardio activity to clients because it's so good for all fitness levels and ages. It's also a great family activity to keep your spouse and kids fit too, and a fun way to spend time with friends. But what does biking really do for you physically?

First, you get the same cardiovascular benefits from cycling that you receive from any other form of aerobic exercise--and your muscles get a boost, too. Bike riding strengthens your thighs, hips and glutes. If your route includes hills, your arms and upper body will benefit as you stand to pedal. In addition, cycling is gentle on your joints and helps preserve cartilage. 

That's especially advantageous for those who suffer from muscle strain, foot problems, knee injuries or pain, back pain or impact-related injuries caused by running, jogging or walking. If you're overweight and just starting an exercise program, cardiovascular exercise can be hard on your joints. Biking, however, is a great choice as it reduces this impact. Daily routine biking can help fight the incremental weight gain and waistline expansion many experience at midlife too.

With any sport it's important to stretch and I've got a great series that will help your hips, glutes, hamstrings, calves and more whether you cycle or not.  See this Week's Feature Story and meet me on the mat this week to help yourself also to have a "happy seat."
