If you are reading this on Feb. 22, it's another milestone for me, my 52nd birthday.  I had a laugh as I facetimed with my granddaughter Isabella, age 4 and told her Nanna would be 52.  Oh the cute face!  It might as well have been 152!  But the truth is I'm proud of my age.  I've always done my best to be healthy, but I'm religious about it now, and being around to watch Isabella grow up is just one reason why.
My Isabella

When clients are setting goals, I like to see them also set a goal for their next physical to be their best.  Not only can you "grow" an inch because your posture will have improved so much  with elongating yoga exercises and the benefits to your spine and posture that I've developed with lumbar stabiliation--my first step and what I encourage even longtime clients to do once as maintenace at least every two weeks -- but when you lift with the right form and posture you will protect your joints and muscle mass with strength training and help combat osteoporosis.  You will also reduce injury doing everyday activities including housework.   We just can't expect to do the same things we've always done -- including returning to summer yardwork and gardening -- when we don't fight to retain our muscle mass by weight training and eating for muscle gains.  Over 50, there's a science to it and you need to know what that is.

If you are serious about caring for your body, you have to consider how you fuel it, not just when you are working out but all the time. You can't get the body you want without the proper combination of diet and exercise. For example, if you are a woman, to lose 1 pound a week, add a zero to your body weight, add 20% of that number for extra daily activity get your daily caloric rate. Subtract 500 calories a day (by eating 500 calories less, but do not go below 1,200 cals/day.  Example:  Woman weighs 170 lbs.  Add a zero = 1700 x 20% = 340.   1700 + 340 = 2040 - 500 cals = 1,540 cals to lose one lb a week of true weight loss.  Take a moment and do your own test!

Birthdays and other holidays can cause us to gain weight, because we say "yes" to eating out, treats, etc.  I myself had several celebratory events this weekend.  It pays to plan and look at calorie counts before you go. While you may try to  make good choices at restaurants, consider that the standard serving size in an average restaurant entry contains six whopping servings! Have the waiter cut your portion at least in half, order wisely on the entrée such as baked fish, get your low-cal dressing on the side, avoid the rolls and alcohol and you'll "faire" much better!  By preparing to succed you actually can!

As you get into better shape, you'll find you'll need to eat more to fuel your extra muscle (hooray!).  Don't miss my main article for more on how to eat right and fuel your muscle growth.

You can boost weight loss and reduce belly fat with yoga and meditation too.  Also my Far Infrared Sauna can help you lose 700 calories on a 30-minute session.   Read my feature below and learn more about that and another healthy step Jennifer Aniston and I have in common besides that she eats Mediterranen too!

Better health is there for anyone who wants it. Sometimes we're just not sure where to begin. I will make my knowledge work for you and develop a program for your body, your lifestyle, and health needs. ~ Jackie

This Week's Feature Story
What's Cookin' for Your Weight Loss?
Knowing What to Eat and When

You can't get the body you want without the proper combination of diet and exercise and you need to eat right for strength gains. Building muscle helps you burn more calories too--that's why it's easier for men to lose weight quicker than women (they have more testosterone and muscle.)  But understanding it all can be challenging, so here's help!

YOGA THIS WEEK with JACKIE!
Spiritual Practice:  your keyboard and computer do more than just tax your body.  It taxes your mind, which can result in weight gain beyond just sitting.  Join Jackie for a weight loss flow and pranyama (breathwork) series that will calm your mind and body and help you to hit a "reset" button for better health and wellness every day.
Physical Practice: Yoga for weight loss and to ease neck and shoulder pain.   Jackie will teach you a series of postures to help your body to burn more calories and also to help you restore your body from the hours spent sitting in front of computers and hunched over mobile phones and tablets.   In addition, learn breathing and other techniques to reduce cortisol (a factor in belly fat), help thyroid function and more. Yoga Sculpt students will have the added benefit of strength training while Stretch and Restore students will enjoy deeper holds with more props and added breathwork (pranyama) and meditation.
