My No More Knee Pain Edition

It's no secret our bodies feel better with symmetry, but as human beings we are not naturally symmetrical. Life activities from computer work to driving, performing various household tasks, etc. pull us even more out of alignment and can wreak havoc on our bodies.  We all have a dominant side.   Which side of your hips is your weight resting on as you read this?  How about when you drive your car?  Or sit on your couch?

Morever, spending hours at a desk without awareness of your asymmentrical (lopsided) tendencies can cause issues with weight distribution and muscle firing patters, resulting in compensations that feed all already present issues. For example, your glutes will atrophy or become imbalanced when you sit too much.      If you have lordosis as in the above diagram (as many women do), you have even more reason to read the main feature below and click to learn why!

Additionally, fitness activities that are hard on the joints, from running to Jazzercise or Rumba classes can exhasberate these problems, especially if they are performed on poorly cushioned surfaces or with running outdoors without a track.  

One area that is hit the hardest is the knees.  That's because three - six times the force of your body weight goes on your knees with each step.  That means just losing 10 pounds takes 30-60 pounds of force off your knees as you walk -- there's another great reason to lose even 10 pounds.
