 Bring on Your Balance and Inner Fire!

Find your inner strength and bring on the tapas, and no I don't mean a wide variety of appetizers!  To us yogis, tapas means bringing on perserverance or having a fiery discipline with a constant, intense commitment necessary to burn off the impediments that keep us from being in a true state of union with ourselves, our lives and our goals.  

Wise effort can be discerned as the difference between someone who simply fantasizes and someone who is on the path toward their dreams.  Effort is required to make anything happen for us in the physical world, and yet we have to balance tapas with what we yogis also know as santosha (contentment), which is being content with what you have attained or where you start.  

That means being able to take a look in the mirror at where your body is at with acceptance so you can lift weights with good form, and still loving yourself because you know you are making a positive change to improve.  Not looking back, having a fire to get where you want to be, and still appreciating your NOW.   And/or it's accepting that even if you can't get into the deepest version of a yoga pose, it doesn't mean that your pose is "bad," instead it is as good as it can be today, and it will be even better as you practice tomorrow.   Truly with anything, it never works to beat yourself up about the past, or be so lofty in your future goals, that you aren't really serious.  Find what you seriously want and set that plan in place in writing with a balanced, realistic progressive plan, and then stay true to that path to achieve it.  Keep that fire going so you don't derail, while balancing with reality that every good goal takes time and effort, and remembering if we perservere at our best today, we can always know we will have an even better tomorrow.

While it's good to be aware of where we are physically in a mirror, or mentally at our choices and our goals, (or both), it's also important to fuel our bodies right.  Sometimes we just need help to find that balance, including what we eat  or drink, or supplements to enhance our energy and performance, or improve sleep, or reduce stress. As we age into our 40s, especially over age 50, our bodies just don't process nutrients the way they did at age 20 or 30.  The outdoor elements, or lack thereof, also do a number of our immune fuction, and when it's as cold as Sunday, who can get enough sunshine and that important Vitamin D?

Anything that requires self-displine, whether on or off the mat, helps you build the internal discipline of tapas.  They may not be easy, like climbing to the peak of a mountain, doing a yoga pose you tend to avoid, or a new fitness exercise because it's hard to do.  But like I tell clients, those very things you avoid are those that can bring the greatest positive changes.

Winter Reminder for Holistic Health
Winter Weather is here!  Please help keep the studio as clean as possible.  For personal training clients, fitness shoes MUST be brought in a bag to keep the floor clean for all clients and yoga students.  I also ask that anyone who is coughing or sneezing cancel their session and not attend yoga class. 
Friendly reminder too: please do not wear any perfume to yoga class as others may have sensitivies. I pride myself on offering an environment where even specialized health needs can be accomodated.

Physical Practice: 

Balance and movement of the body with proper alignment means an understanding of how to truly develop your muscular power.  Learn how best to utilize multiple muscle groups to work together, which will also improve your core strength and overall balance.  While the Warrior 2 posture above appears simple, this diagram demonstrates all that must occur for alignment  including the loops and spirals of the musculature.  
But this pose also requires engaging deltoids, quads, gluteus medius and lateral rotators of the hip as well as stretches adductors of the the thigh and piriformis.  If arms are fully engaged, biceps and triceps are strengthend as well. Engaging to your fullest potential and keeping your yogic breath requires both muscular awareness, ability, inner fire and breath.  
Yoga Sculpt Classes will enjoy added strength training for even more personal power!  Stretch and Restore students will have the benefit of working with more props and added breath work -- sometimes the key to true opening and balance is found by  utilizing a prop.
