Want a Healthy Heart? These days it seems most people are more concerned with what's showing in the mirror, but I always say it's even more important to know what's happenning physically and mentally beneath the surface that has to do with overall health.  With heart disease now the leading killer of women as well as men, don't neglect this all important organ and be training to keep it healthy. See the feature story below for my Peripheral Heart Action Training advice!

Why Every Athlete Should Practice Yoga
When asked if yoga is part of their workouts, many athletes will say they don't have the time to add yoga to their already intense training schedules. Some say they don't see how "stretching and breathing" would be of any benefit to them. Others say they've discovered yoga while recuperating from an injury. Why not enhance your performance and prevent injury by adding yoga to your training plan now? A well-rounded yoga practice includes dynamic flexibility training, core stabilization, strengthening and balance work. By focusing on these vital elements, yoga can help you recover faster after workouts, open up the tight areas that hinder performance, improve range of motion, and develop mental focus and concentration.  Even if athletes stretch pre- or post-workout, they are usually just stretching the muscles in the same direction and plane of motion in which they will be exercising. Yoga goes beyond simple stretching by working the muscles and joints through all ranges of motioactivating the little-used muscles that support the primary movers. And more and more men are practicing yoga than ever before.  In fact, on Face the Nation yesterday, Speaker of the House John Boehner remarked that "yes, he did practice yoga" and how much it helped his back and golf game!  Click here to keep reading!

Power Yoga Warriors
You may be surprised to know that 70% of weight loss comes through proper breathing. However, this is just one of a multitude of benefits. Ever wondered why the military has
soldiers march with a cadence call? That's because marching
with cadence builds great stamina. The marching technique of engaging the arms also
increases cardiovascular benefits and weight loss which is why
during my fitness boot camps and training we make sure to move those arms!  So don't forget to do cardiovascular exercise using upper and lower extremities and when walking power walk pumping your arms. For the best breathwork take yoga classes and enjoy yoga sculpt to get the benefit of weights and yoga to beat osteopororisis and improve circulation overall! See following article and yoga this week below for more great heart-healthy info!

THIS WEEK'S FEATURE!  - Why You and Your Heart Need to Exercise Now More Than Ever with Peripheral Heart Action (PHA) Training!
Heart Disease is one of those insidious illnesses that often takes people off guard.  It used to be the leading killer of men, especially those that do not exercise over the age of 50.  They are just going about their daily lives, not eating right or exercising right and BOOM - there's a heart attack.  But the increase in cardiovascular disease in women has been reaching critical proportions (one of every two women will now die of the disease) for the last 10 years.

JKFY Client and Cardiologist Dr. Michelle Montpetit Lemp, knows best, "As a cardiologist, I'm concerned about others' health. Jackie helps me pay attention to my own."

Stress stimulates appetite, it increases abdominal fat, it increases risks for disease, especially cardiovascular disease and it can even play a role in our intimate relationships. The list could keep going, but what is one of the best means to relieve it? Exercise, eating right and the ever important practice of yoga in helping our bodies cope.  Stress therefore does not necessarily cause disease, but simply exacerbates the potential for disease.  Increased cardiopulmonary responses (e.g., blood pressure, heart rate, dilation of breathing tubes to move more air) are just one of many fight or flight symptoms that can lead to more chronic and life-threatening concerns.  Take care of your heart and health. Read my Blogs on the subject this week and join me for yoga this week.~ Jackie Kold
