THIS WEEK'S FEATURE!
Dangers of Untrained Exercise -
Plus Be Sure Your Student is Sports-Smart

Perhaps you currently work out at a gym or have home fitness equipment but aren't quite sure if you are doing the exercises correctly or using it properly.  Maybe that machine is gathering dust (or has even become a clothes hanger!) because you've lost motivation and now you just can't seem to get in the swing of things.

Regardless of your current situation, keep in mind that the latest research shows that musculoskeletal injuries were the number two reason for physician visits in the U.S. with approximately 31 million visits made to physician offices for back problems. Next in line were knee injuries and 70% of these were from non-contact causes.

"Many knee injuries occur in teens, often during after school sports. With the school year and these activities gearing up again, it's a great time to focus on fitness safety. This includes assessing your child's fitness level, knowledge of the importance of stability and flexibility training. Spending time with a trainer even for a few sessions is excellent preventive medicine at any age."~ Jackie Kold

Common Injuries of Untrained Exercise
* Using too much weight causing poor form/increased injury.
* Improper or no warm-up.
* Loss of core stabilization activity.
* Not using safety devices.
* Not breathing properly or holding your breath.
* Problems with range of motion (too much or not enough).
* Performing the exercise too fast.
* Improper or no cool down.

Beginners (and often even those who exercise regularly without proper instruction) often have trouble with core and scapular stabilization, and do not know their limits. They can also have difficulty telling the difference between muscle soreness and inappropriate joint pain.  Research suggests that enhancing neuromuscular stabilization (or body control) may alleviate the high incidence of noncontact injuries from a return to activity in those deconditioned, youth and teens, or those who are beginning new fitness programs. ~ Jackie Kold

When considering what program is best for you and your family, it's important to note the differences of exercising with various equipment, for example free weights versus gym equipment.

Your Mind Matters with Weight Loss and Control
It's commonplace during my free diet consults with clients when I review food journaling how much eating bad foods (salty, sweet, fatty) tends to be related to mood. For many, overeating and snacking is due to stress/anger or boredom (interesting how this is at both ends of the emotional mood spectrum).
I found the following to be an important "get real" message for those trying to lose weight: Another thing I know for sure now is that you've got to ask yourself,
"What kind of life do you want now and how close are you to living it? You cannot ever live the life of your dreams without coming face to face with the truth. Every unwanted pound creates another layer of lies. It's only when you peel back those layers when you are set free: free to work out, free to eat responsibly, free to live the life you want and deserve to live. Tell the truth and you'll learn to eat to satisfy your physical hunger and stop burying your hopes and dreams beneath layers of fat.   Yoga helps with this too!  We will help our minds and bodies!  See "Yoga Classes This Week" below to get mentally and physically fit!~ Jackie

Jackie in Take 5 Breath a great help for mindfulness with eating, for students with school and more!
"What I love about yoga is that it requires us to look within, to become in tune with ourselves. The inward reflection we receive on the mat and with meditation helps you to better know your personal truth and have an emotional awakening to feel better, eat right and embrace change. Join me this week to experience it yourself." ~ Jackie Kold
