Don't Let Foot Problems Sideline Your Fitness - Plus Important Flip Flop News

I've been published in a national magazine on podiatric issues and affably referred to as the "foot master". Why? Years ago I developed my Steps to Fitness program as a result of my own frustration that programs did not accurately address the impact the feet have on total body fitness or therapy. Having been born with clubbed feet I am acutely aware of that impact and specialize in those with foot issues.

Even if you don't have foot concerns, this article (continued on my Blog) is a must-read, because unknown foot issues can suddenly become painful when you begin putting significant stress on your feet, such as when you are starting a new fitness program or taking on a new fitness challenge, such as a 5K.    

Gravity is not on our side as we age, and arch support and a good orthotic can make all the difference too.   If you have health concerns, such as diabetes, even seemingly insignificant foot woes can turn into major medical problems if you aren't careful.

I wasn't that surprised to find this photo of an ad for flipflops showing a model with such bad posture as well as pronated feet (turning in) which is a main reason for bunions.  Wearing these infrequently around the house is one thing, but if this is a typical summer shoe, you need to know the consequences...



You can live to be your total body best!  Don't miss yoga this week, especially if you need help with the feet and balance.  

In yoga our feet are considered the temple and foundation of the body.  Just as the foundation of a temple must be level to support all the structures above, so the feet must be balanced and sturdy to support the legs, spine, arms, and head. If our base is tilted or collapsed, it will be reflected up through the body as distortion or misalignment. A person's tracks tell quite a true story. They inform quietly about ankles and knees, but they shout the news about hips and pelvis. If one foot is consistently everted [tilted onto its inner edge], the ankle, the knee, or, perhaps more likely, the entire pelvic basin is rotated. ~ Jackie
