Greetings COSCA Members and Friends:

Welcome to the Summer 2013 edition of The Claymore, COSCA's online newsletter that keeps you up to date on what is happening in the Scottish American Clan & Family world.
Things are popping at COSCA so there is a great deal of good news to report.  We are thrilled to have new volunteers, many new members and new energy for our work of supporting Scottish American Clan and Family organizations.  We bring you some of the highlights here but don't forget to hop over to www.COSCA.net every now and again because there is much more happening than we can cover in The Claymore.

Yours aye,

Bannockburn Live 2014
Clan & Family Lineup Announced

But, um ... please leave the Sgian Dubh at home ...

The National Trust For Scotland has announced the lineup of 33 Clan and Armigerous Families that will be represented on the field in the Clan Village during the 2014 BannockburnLive Reenactment Events.  In light of the humble number clans and families that will be represented at this Homecoming event, COSCA sought and was approved for our own pitch in the Clan Village. COSCA is undertaking plans to be present at Bannockburn to represent our members who cannot be there to greet the world in 2014.

Are you curious about which Clans and Families will be at BannockburnLive?  See the list HERE.

Of course COSCA will rush right back to the States in time to host the 2nd Annual Scottish American Clan & Family Caucus at Grandfather Mountain just a few days following the Bannockburn festivities on July 10, 2014.  Whew.

Plastic Sgian Dubhs?  For Real?

Recent announcements regarding the Bannockburn events have not come without controversy. The contracted events management company that is running the BannockburnLive show has made the unfortunate decision to ban Sgian Dubhs - indeed all sharp objects - from the field at Bannockburn.  Safety and security are the proffered reasons.  Think the sgian dubh ban is silly? So do we.

Scottish American Clan & Family Caucus:  Working Groups underway working on Best Practices for Clans

COSCA's Grandfather Mountain Scottish Clan & Family Caucus decided by consensus to create five Working Groups charged with exploring and making recommendations for the benefit of the full Caucus in five specific areas of concern.  The specific areas were determined during the afternoon session on July 11, 2013 by consensus of the Caucus assembly.  These areas of concern were chosen primarily because of their:

  • critical importance to our common missions;
  • difficulty of achieving success in each area; and
  • commonality across all types and sizes of the assembled organizations
Work Is Underway!  All five Working Groups have been formed with a diverse and talented range of volunteers and Group Coordinators have been appointed for each working group to keep the focus on track. Duncarron Medieval Village:
Early Clan Heritage Comes To Life with Clanranald Trust

Want to know what part of your Scottish vacation your young son or daughter are most going to remember with great glee?  It'll be Duncarron Medieval Village if the Clanranald Trust For Scotland is able to complete it's dream of constructing a full scale fortified early clan outpost and settlement in the Carron Valley southwest of Stirling, Scotland.

It all started as a concept scribbled on a beer mat in 1995.  An image of a museum without glass display cabinets, without boundaries. A museum with fully interactive exhibits that would teach about Scotland's past.  A place that youngsters and adults would not soon forget. A medieval Scottish fort living and breathing all around them.

From the humble pub beginning, the Clanranald Trust for Scotland is now a recognized charity based in Kincardine, Scotland. The Trust was established in 1995 as an educational organization and has staff members and a large contingent of volunteers who service the objectives of the Trust. The Trust's ultimate goal is to replicate a medieval fortified village as an interactive educational visitor attraction. The idea behind the project is to provide an arena in which groups, individuals and school parties can experience the atmosphere of an authentic medieval working community, Duncarron Medieval Village. The aim is to present a true re-creation of the Scottish nation's past, striving to provide a fitting testimony for our ancestors.

Duncarron has caught the attention of some very interesting people:

Council Of Scottish Clans & Associations

COSCA was founded in 1976 by Dr. Herbert MacNeil and others for the purpose of bringing Scottish clan societies together. The initial meeting was held at the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games in Linville, NC and the organization continues to honor this tradition by gathering on the mountain annually.  Today COSCA welcomes all kinds of Scottish American organizations as well as interested individuals.

COSCA's primary purpose is to preserve and promote the customs, traditions, and heritage of the Scottish people. We currently serve as a clearing house for Scottish American activities throughout the US.  Through our many member clans, families and organizations, COSCA represents thousands of American Scots across the nation in furtherance of our mission.
