The Center for Innovation and Research on Veterans & Military Families at the USC School of Social Work has received a $200,000 gift from Blue Shield of California Foundation to support local efforts to help transitioning veterans in Los Angeles County. The gift will provide much needed support to the Los Angeles Veterans Collaborative, a network of more than 400 organizations and stakeholders that meets monthly to discuss some of the most pressing issues facing the local military community. "What's exciting to me is that the LAVC is not a short-term phenomenon. It's becoming a vital institution of Los Angeles," said Peter Long, president and CEO of the foundation. Read more

Through CIR and the Los Angeles Veterans Collaborative, the USC School of Social Work is making a tangible difference in the lives of local veterans and military families. The USC Social Work Initiative will raise $75 million, part of the historic Campaign for the University of Southern California, providing the investment necessary to develop highly trained practitioners and visionary leaders who will shape the 21st century. Watch LAVC video

In a Current Psychiatry Reports article, researchers from USC School of Social Work and Fort Hood, Texas, identified that failing to address the multiple root causes and the role played by military culture will continue to hamper efforts to curtail sexual assault in the military. The military's one-size-fits-all approach to sexual assault prevention and training also overlooks sensitive and uncomfortable issues. Read more

On June 3, Secretary of Veterans Affairs Robert McDonald visited the University of Southern California, where he met with President C. L. Max Nikias, along with other USC leaders who are working on veterans' issues in the community, including Anthony Hassan, clinical professor and CIR director. This was an opportunity to discuss how the university can further partner with the VA to better meet the needs of the area's veterans.  Read more
