 PLAYOFFS!...WE'RE TALKING ABOUT PLAYOFFS

The second season begins this Friday night at Mercer Stadium as the Hyacks take on Handsworth in the Wildcard round. The Hyacks head into this game ranked 4th in the province, following a 35-24 win over defending Provincial Champion South Delta on Friday night. This marks the program's highest provincial ranking since the 2009 season. The win also brought the coveted Kushnir Boot back to New West, as the two programs battle annually for the trophy named in honor of the late Bill Kushnir, the man who started both the South Delta and NWSS programs.

On Friday, the Hyacks got things started on Seniors night with a 15 yard TD from David Penalver, who would also earn player of the game honors. Later in the opening quarter, Jamie Shiho found Jeff Lugtu for a 38 yard TD pass. In the 3rd quarter, Jordan Guzman scored from 22 yards, to restore the Hyacks lead at 22-21. Shiho, who returned to the lineup after a 2-game absence, scored a pair of TDs along the ground (40 & 21 yards) to provide the eventual game winning points. Defensively Gurvir Ghuman had 8 tackles and a sack, Lugtu had 7 tackles and a sack, while Penalver also added 7 tackles. The defense allowed just 3 points in the 2nd half and just 10 first downs for the entire game. Connor Pattison was named the lineman of the game. A complete recap of Friday's game can be found here

6 HYACKS NAMED TO CONFERENCE ALL-STAR TEAM

Six more Hyacks were selected as AAA Western Conference All-stars, following their outstanding play this season: Linebacker Jeff Lugtu safety David Penalver and offensive lineman Sunny Rishi, were among the top rated players at their respective positions. Receiver Michael Thind, QB Jamie Shiho and defensive lineman Dillon Cusker were also selected. Honorable mention, receiving votes was Gurvir Ghuman.

Jeff Lugtu (LB): A captain and all-star for a 2nd straight season, Jeff finished 6th in the province in tackling with 63 stops in 9 games. Also added a 3 sacks and a fumble recovery. Jeff already has one scholarship offer and many other schools interesting in recruiting him.

David Penalver (DB): Pound for pound, among the toughest Hyacks ever. 4th on the team with 31 tackles, added 255 yards and 3 TDs rushing, 3 rec for 19 yards, returns kicks and recorded 31 tackles on defense.

Jamie Shiho (QB): Despite missing 2 games with injury, Shiho has passed for 852 yards and 7 TDs and leads the Hyacks in rushing with 457 yards and 5 TDs.

Michael Thind (WR): Finished 3rd in the province with 38 receptions for 595 yards and 5 TDs.

Sunny Rishi (OL): A captain who is the anchor of an offensive line that has paved the way for an offense that topped the Western conference in points (174, 34.8 ppg) and rushing yards (2416, avg 268.4).

Dillon Cusker (DL): A captain who has made a solid contribution on both sides of the ball. Counted 10 tackles and a sack on defense

JV's ENTER PLAYOFFS AS #1 SEED

Following an unbeaten 9-0 record against BC competition and a 2nd straight division title, the JV Hyacks will enter the BC AAA JV playoffs as the number one seed in the province, their highest seed ever. Despite not dressing many of their key players, New West wrapped up the season last Thursday with a 35-14 win in an exhibition game at Carson Graham. Robertson Yagyog scored a pair of TDs (30 & 8 yds), while Lucas Sabau threw a pair of TD passes: a 36 yarder to Shane Belsher and a 12 yard scoring toss to Evan Pattison. Broxx Comia recovered a fumble in the endzone to round out the scoring for the Hyacks.

As the number one seed, the JVs will have a first round playoff bye. Then they'll play the winner of the Notre Dame vs Mt Boucherie game next Thursday, Nov 19th at 5:30 pm at Mercer Stadium.
