 HYACKS REMAIN PERFECT AT MERCER

The Varsity Hyacks clinched a playoff spot on Friday night with a hard-fought 19-14 win over Notre Dame.

Kale Brock opened the scoring for the home team with an 18 yard TD run in the first quarter. Mackenzie Ratcliffe gave the Hyacks a 13-0 halftime lead with a 20 yard run in the final seconds of the 2nd quarter. Angelo Tanjuaquio put the game away with a 3 yard TD run early in the 4th quarter. Tyrone Morgan led all rushers with 112 yards on 15 carries. Both Morgan and Ratcliffe were making their first varsity starts. Prabh Bal led the charge defensively with 10 tackles.

The win improves the team's record to 6-2 overall (3-2 in league play) and 5-0 at Mercer Stadium. The Hyacks will wrap up the regular season this Friday night at home against the Handsworth Royals. A win for the Hyacks, who are currently honorable mention in the Provincial AAA Big Five Rankings, would clinch home field advantage for the opening round of the playoffs. Kickoff time is 7:30 pm at Mercer Stadium

SENIORS NIGHT THIS FRIDAY AT MERCER

When the Hyacks take on Handsworth at Mercer stadium this Friday, the program will continue its tradition of recognizing 19 graduating seniors. The list includes eight players who have been with the Hyacks since Jr Bantam including, Tommy Robertson, Tanner Jorgenson, James Nicolas and James & Stewart Sommerfeld. Other names like Tristan Sands, Bogdan Pavel and Angelo Tanjuaquio, joined the program in JV. This group of young men has grown together, worked extremely hard, and has helped to restore the winning tradition of Hyack Football.

The players and the parent/guardians who have supported them, not just as football players but as students and young men for the past 17 years will also be recognized prior to the game, in what has become a very special tradition in the Hyacks program. Thanks to all of them for their contributions. Parents of the seniors are asked to arrive by 7:15 pm.

TAILGATE AUCTION ANOTHER HUGE SUCCESS

The 11th annual Hyack Football Tailgate Auction took place at LaPerla Ballroom in River Market on Saturday night. Over $28,000 in items were available for those who attended. Among the highlights:

  • The trip to Hawaii and the Hyack player work party were won by Coach Andrew McKechnie
  • The dinner for 12 at Joeys Restaurant went to Louise Perry at G&F Financial
  • Deb Wardle took home the weekend getaway to Victoria
  • Dave Vallee won the Caribbean Cruise, courtesy of Odenza.
Harper Sherman was the winner of the arm wrestling competition, while Billy Collins' team set a record for ticket sales. In all it was a fun-filled night for all those who attended. Most importantly we would like to thank all of the parents and volunteers who assisted in making this another successful event, led by our event co-chairs, Diane Strandberg & Nancy O'Connor. The Tailgate Auction is our major fundraiser of the year and has raised over $140,000 in support of Hyack Football.

YOUTH FOOTBALL UPDATE

The JB Black team won their 3rd straight game, 20-6 over the Westside Warriors 20. Playing in his first game in the backfield, Manraj Phangura scored a pair of TDs, while Jerrell Cummings also scored. Juno Kim played a great defensive game, making several key tackles. The JB Black squad has made great improvements throughout the season and is looking forward to the playoffs!

The JB Orange team lost at North Delta, but still received solid performances from Jevaun Jacobsen, who was moved from outside linebacker to inside and made many tackles. Kinsale Phillips had a strong game at corner and Broxx Comia had a pair of long punt returns.

The Pee Wee Black put themselves in the playoff picture with a 22-6 win over Coquitlam. It was a great team effort as the players overcame a 6-0 Coquitlam lead. Ian Marin completed key passes throughout the game and Jude Buchanan rushed for two touchdowns. Defensively Blake Ramsey and Jason Stocker had very strong games with a number of tackles for losses.

The Atom played one of their most exciting games of the season, falling 32-30 to Cloverdale... Phillip Marin scored a pair of TDs, while Jacob Macumber added 1 TD, 3 PATs and amazing tackle. Trevor Prosperi-Porta completed a pair of passes and Callum Rogers led a solid O-line. The Atoms still have a great shot at making the playoffs with a win this week.

The Tyke flag team defeated North Surrey 13-12. Jovan Manhas and Traymaine Belanger stood out with great blocks from the backfield, opening up holes for Aiden Dutta, among others. Justin Rice has steadily improved his kicking all year, and made an extra point to seal the win.

The mini-tyke flag teams wrapped up a successful season with the final play-day at Mackin Park. Thirty-four Hyacks, aged 4-6 took part in the 6-week league and had plenty of fun while learning the basics of football! They were also featured in "Perry's Prospects" which will air on CTV in approximately 3 weeks.
