 HYACKS WIN HOMECOMING

With fireworks waiting to go off post game, the Hyacks had some of their own fireworks during the game, with their biggest offensive output since 2009, winning 44-22 over Centennial. Matt Seymour got the home team on the board in the first quarter with a 37 yard punt return, then Angelo Tanjuaquio's first TD of the game gave the Hyacks a 16-8 lead at halftime. New West then opened the 3rd quarter with back to back TDs from Tanjuaquio and Julian Ramirez, to take a commanding 31-8 lead. Terel Bellanger rounded out the scoring with a pair of 4th quarter TDs. The Hyacks pilled up close to 300 rushing yards, while Gurveer Dhaliwal added 4 receptions for 60 yards through the air.

Defensively, James Sommerfeld led the way with 7 tackles and a forced fumble, James Nicolas had 5 tackles, Jeremy Stewart had 4 tackles, 1 blocked kick and broke up 3 passes, while Bogdan Pavel recorded 3 tackles and a sack. Ramirez was named Prime Time Player of the Game and Harper Sherman was named Dairy Queen Lineman of the Game. New West now improves to 3-0 this season and 8-1 on homecoming night. The complete game story can be seen here.

HOMECOMING - PRESENTED BY KEY WEST FORD - ANOTHER HUGE SUCCESS

As expected, Friday's celebration may have been the best Homecoming event ever! A crowd of close to 2300 was at Mercer Stadium, many of them showed up early for the pre-game party.

From the BC Skydiving team bringing in the game ball, to Westminster Avenue playing at halftime, to the car raffle and through the post-game fireworks show, Friday's festivities brought out the best in New West! The crowd was a wonderful mix of young and old, there was a tremendous amount of media coverage and promotions, and we are now all looking forward to seeing Coquitlam mayor Richard Stewart wearing a Hyacks jersey at a council meeting, after New West mayor Wayne Wright won his bet!

Andrew Harris of the BC Lions, who was on hand to sign autographs, tweeted: "...New West Hyacks do high school football proper!"

Thanks to all of the fans, sponsors and countless volunteers who made the night a memorable one for all involved. But a special thanks to our organizing committee or Deb Cusker, Deb Wardle, Dal Palmer, Mary Feldhaus, Don Hauka, Pierre Massicotte and Ed King.

Also thanks to our media sponsor CBC for being on-site and to Shane Foxman for playing in the alumni game. And finally thanks to our presenting sponsor Key West Ford. GM Adam Isfeld said he wanted to do "more than write a cheque" and he certainly lived up to that. His additional advertising along with his teams' hands on approach with all aspects of the event, including the pre-game party, set a new standard for community partnerships! Thank you Adam!

HYACKS HEAD TO VICTORIA TO FACE TOP RANKED TEAM IN CANADA

The two time defending provincial AAA champions and number one ranked team in Canada, Mt Douglas Rams, will be the next test for the unbeaten Hyacks, this Friday afternoon in Victoria. Both teams enter the game with identical 3-0 records, after the Rams 28-23 win over 2nd ranked Terry Fox last Saturday in Victoria.

Parents are reminded that the team will be meeting at Mercer at 8 am and departing by 8:20. We will be walking onto the 10 am ferry. Game time is 2:30 pm and we will be on the 7 am return ferry. Players should bring their own lunch and money for food on the ferry.

YOUTH FOOTBALL UPDATE

Despite outstanding efforts from Cameron Mah and Malcom James, the JB Black squad lost for the first time in GSL play.

Our Pee Wee Black squad also got the thrill of a lifetime playing at BC Place (pictured below) on Sunday at halftime of the Lions-Alouettes game, as a part of the BC Lions salute to amateur football.  The Pee Wee Orange team won their game 18-14.

The cheer squad meanwhile, did a fantastic job on Friday night at the high school Homecoming game.
