HYACKS KEEP KUSHNIR BOOT IN NEW WEST

The Hyacks began the season with a thrilling come from behind victory, 20-14 over South Delta, as the two teams battled for the Kushnir Boot. Quarterback Tommy Robertson's 3 rushing TDs led the way for the Hyacks, who trailed in this game 14-7 in the 3rd quarter, before coming back to win. Matt Seymour made 4 tackles, broke up a pair of passes and added a 25 yard reception for New West, while Jeff Lugtu added 6 tackles. Robertson was named the Prime Time Sports Player of the Game, while, Jonathan Tomalty was the Dairy Queen Lineman of the Game.

The game was played in honor of the late Bill Kushnir, who founded both the Hyacks and Sun Devils programs. New West now holds a 4-1 lead in the all-time series. This was the first loss for the defending AA Champion Sun Devils since 2011. They came into the game as the number one ranked team in AA, while the Hyacks held an honorable mention position in the AAA rankings. The complete story can be seen here:

JV HYACKS OPEN SEASON ON THURSDAY

The JVs will begin their season this Thursday, Sept 5th against Lord Tweedsmuir. Kickoff is 5:30 pm at Mercer Stadium. After posting an 8-3 record in 2012, the grade 9-10 group has high expectations coming into this season.

On Friday the Hyacks wrapped up fall camp with a practice/scrimmage against WJ Mouat, the team that knocked us out of the playoffs last year. This time New West looked dominant. Among those who stood out were David Penalver and Nick Hauka, who each scored long TD runs. Brian Cagampan added a TD and stood out on defense, while Gurvir Ghuman got the attention of coaches with his solid all-around play.

YOUTH FOOTBALL UNDERWAY

The Jr Bantam Orange kicked off what should be another strong season with a 46-0 win over Westside... Linemen Yanni Angelopoulos stood out on both sides of the ball, with a TD off a scoop and score on defense. Daniel Dirta played well on offense with 1 TD. Sammy Sidhu and Kinsale Phillips made a number of key stops on defense, leading the Hyacks to the shutout.

In other action, out teams split with Cloverdale, with the Atoms winning and the Pee Wees losing. The Tyke flag team fell 18-13 to a very good North Surrey squad. The mini-tykes continue to practice with 34 players and begin games later in September. The cheer squad was at their enthusiastic best on the weekend, and they will also be performing at the high school Homecoming game.
