Students Experience Carnegie Hall
Symphonic Wind Ensemble rehearses in Carnegie Hall prior to their performance.

Fellow students, faculty, donors and administrators from the IPFW campus had the experience of a lifetime watching the IPFW Symphonic Wind Ensemble performing at the Isaac Stern Auditorium in Carnegie Hall. Prior to the performance on March 8, 2016, the wind ensemble concluded a four-day tour that afforded them a variety of rehearsal and performance experiences, along with opportunities to see the Metropolitan Opera from the audience perspective during a performance of Le Nozze di Figaro and from backstage.
Lincoln Center

Assistant Professor Daniel Tembras, director of instrumental studies at IPFW, planned the extensive trip as soon as the invitation had been extended by the New York Wind Band Festival. More than $70,000 was raised by Dean John O'Connell, the Department of Music and the Office of Advancement from other IPFW colleges and vice chancellors, Indiana Purdue Student Government Association, Sweetwater individual donors, parents and other businesses.

The tour included performance stops in Mansfield, Penn., and with the Columbia Festival of Winds at Columbia University. Students toured the Museum of Modern Art, 9/11 Memorial, Lincoln Center, Times Square and lunched at world-famous Sardi's restaurant with Chancellor Vicky Carwein, other IPFW administrators, Dean John O'Connell, faculty, parents and donors.
Times Square

In Carnegie Hall, the Symphonic Wind Ensemble performed with Billy Hunter, trumpet; and presented the world premiere of Michael Markowski's Forever Summer. Associate Professor Hamilton Tescarollo performed Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue to conclude the performance. "It was an amazing experience to have the opportunity to perform in Carnegie Hall," said Dr. Tescarollo, "Not only because it is such a historic venue, but also because the acoustics were incredible, the piano was wonderful, and our wind ensemble and Dr. Tembras did a tremendous job."

"These types of experiences help students see the vast possibilities available to them as musicians," explained Dean John O'Connell. "We can't thank our supporters enough for all they do for our students."

Feet - The Doctor Loves Feet

Continuing Lecturer Jim Gabbard
completed a class project with his students from his Advanced Photography I: Portraiture class at the end of Fall semester to create photographic images to decorate the walls of the office of Dr. Ashley Bojrab, D.P.M. at 2231 Carew Street. As a podiatric surgical specialist she was interested in feet being the subject of the photos. She selected three works from graphic design major Amy Clark, along with an image of Gabbard's.

Chasing the Northern Lights

VCD Photographer Captures Carnegie Tour

Student Danielle Doepke was invited along on the Carnegie Hall tour to capture the events as they unfolded throughout the trip. A graphic design and imaging and photography dual major, Doepke took images of the pre-tour concert, traveled with the group from the minute they boarded the bus, toured all of the attractions as if she were a music student and was equally exhausted when she returned home. We have included several more of her images for you to enjoy.
