In the era of autonomous vehicles where many experiences have been carrying out worldwide (from the Google Cars in USA to some trials in Bristol and Milton Keynes in the UK for instance), the biggest problem identified regards the Insurance industry. If one driverless vehicle is involved in a road accident, who is going to be responsible for it? the vehicle owner, the vehicle manufacturer or who else?
" Automobile Insurance in the era of Autonomous Vehicles", an interesting study carried out by KPMG, recently published, provides some answers ( PDF).

INN - How can Europe become more innovative
05 Aug 2015 - What will it take to make Europe more innovative? As the World Economic Forum's Global Competitiveness Report has consistently indicated, increasing the quantity, quality and impact of innovation is one of the biggest challenges facing Europe's economy.
It's a very interesting challenge indeed - while Europe has six of the top 10 innovative economies in the world, on average the region performs poorly when compared to other key benchmark economies such as the United States, Japan and Korea, while countries such as China are fast catching up to Europe's innovation levels in terms of capabilities and output of new commercial ideas.

ENE+TRA - Off Road trials for "Electric Highways" Technology in England later this year
11 Aug 2015 - The trials are the first of their kind and will test how the technology would work safely and effectively on the country's motorways and major A roads, allowing drivers of ultra-low emission vehicles to travel long distances without needing to stop and charge the car's battery.
The trials follow the completion of the feasibility study commissioned by Highways England into 'dynamic wireless power transfer' technologies.
The trials are expected to begin later this year following the completion of an ongoing procurement process. The trials will involve fitting vehicles with wireless technology and testing the equipment, installed underneath the road, to replicate motorway conditions.

ITS+TRA - Intelligent Mobility and Freedom from cars: the Finnish vision
12 Aug 2015 - Finland and especially Helsinki have lately received a fair share of global media attention thanks to ambitious plans for bettering urban life by making car ownership obsolete in the next decade.
Or "to fill in those gaps in door-to-door mobility which lead us to choose our cars", like Anne Berner, Finland's Minister of Transport and Communications recently summarized the aim.
The number one avenue for making this vision real is revolutionizing the transportation system through welcoming digitalization and new technology. Going high-tech and getting serious with intelligent mobility.
To get on the intelligent mobility bandwagon, the focus within Finland's transportation policy circles seems to be buzzing around two main pillars.

ENV+ITS+TRA - Google Street View Cars are mapping City Air Pollution
13 Aug 2015 - In one month, three Google Street View cars clocked 750 hours of drive time in Denver (USA). The cars weren't just taking pictures of houses and stores. They were fitted with air pollutions sensors, built by environmental monitoring startup Aclima, and they were taking a reading of ambient air pollution every second.
The mobile sensors monitor a host of environmental pollutants: nitrogen dioxide, nitric oxide, ozone, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane, black carbon, particulate matter and volatile organic compounds. The goal is to track the density of these pollutants and how they change during the day, so that city residents have a sense of what they're inhaling and can adapt their habits.
The three cars in Denver gathered 150 million data points to create a spatial and temporal map of air pollution in the city.

ENE+TEC - New Technology could reduce Wind Energy Costs
13 Aug 2015 - Engineers from the University of Sheffield (UK) developed a novel technique to predict when bearings inside wind turbines will fail which could make wind energy cheaper.
The method, published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society A and developed by Mechanical Engineering research student Wenqu Chen, uses ultrasonic waves to measure the load transmitted through a ball bearing in a wind turbine.
The stress on wind turbine is recorded and then engineers can forecast its remaining service life.
