| Ringing the bell to start market! |
We've had a great start to the 2015 Summer Season. I am sorry that the May newsletter didn't get to you a bit earlier. As they say, better late than never!
This month we look forward to the growing selection of produce as more vendors join us each week. When will the first tomato arrive? When will we see the first green pepper? There is only one way to know.... Come shop the market!
In June, we will be inviting shoppers to join the new Market Club, where members can earn prizes, such as money to shop the market. Watch for details in the June newsletter and on our website.
If you follow the market on Facebook, let us know how you are enjoying your weekly produce! Feel free to share pictures of your favorite meals from market on our Facebook page.
See you at the market!
Market Meals from Tracy's Kitchen
| May Market Stir Fry: Asparagus, Green Onions, and Carrots (served over Red Quinoa). |
| I came across tyfon (aka Holland Greens) on market vendor, Ben Stallings table. He said he liked to stir fry it with a little soy sauce. I brought my first bag home and got a little creative with it. What I came up with is pictured to the right.
Read more about tyfon on Ben's website. |
| Market Products: Carrots, Green Onion, Typhon, cooked with typhon. Once veggies had cooked a bit, added soy sauce and goat cheese, then mixed in the pasta. Delicious! |

Saturday's Market hosted by St. Francis
|
May is Foster Parent Appreciation Month and Saint Francis Community Services would like to say "Thank You" to all of our amazing current Foster Homes and encourage others who are interested in opening their hearts and homes to children by becoming Foster Parents to talk with us about the opportunity. We currently serve 106 children in Lyon, Chase and Morris Counties and over 60% of those children are placed outside of their home county. We need more great people to provide local homes for children that are placed in out of home care. Stop and visit with us at the Market or give Missy Floyd a call at 620-342-7882. We also would like to encourage everyone to participate in our Glow Run 5K on June 5, 2015!! Register at the Market or stop by our office at 1200 Graphic Arts Road, Suite 100 in Emporia.

KSFMNP -- Vouchers for Seniors
Questions? Please ask!
|
Q: When will the KSFMNP vouchers be available and how can we get them?
A: Applications for the Kansas Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program will be available for pick-up starting on June 3rd, 2105 at the ECKAN Community Center at 215 W. 6th Street, Suite 204 (Emporia Humanitarian Center). Seniors may apply on-site Wednesdays from 8am-12pm, throughout the summer until the vouchers are gone.
Currently, there are funds to serve 100 eligible participants. Applications will be served on a first-come, first-serve basis. For more information about the Kansas Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program, call ECKAN Human Services Coordinator, Julia Wilson, at 620.342.4607.
Eligible foods available to purchase with the KSFMNP checks from authorized farmers at participating farmers' markets are defined as "fresh, nutritious, unprepared, locally grown fruits, vegetables, locally produced honey and herbs for human consumption that are produced in Kansas under normal growing conditions."
The Kansas Senior Farmer's Market Program is a project of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The program is coordinated by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), which is collaborating with local partners to identify and distribute checks to eligible seniors.
ECKAN will have information available about the KSFMNP program at the market on Wednesday, June 3, starting at 5pm. Seniors may also contact ECKAN directly to apply.
To be eligible, seniors must meet the following criteria:
1) Age 60 years old or older on the day the money is issued.
2) Income Level: Individual annual gross income (before taxes are withheld) must be at or below $21,775 ($1,815/month). Seniors need to provide their most recent proof of household income.

Fishing plants, fire-starting plants, Kansas bananas, Vitamin C drinks, sweet water from a grape vine, pine needle tea, medicines, poisons, life-saving information, and a visit to an Indian earth lodge are part of the September trek. So, put together a group of family and friends, and let's take a hike!
