A glamorous bedroom makeover
My client is a stylish woman who lives in a waterfront penthouse in Boston's North End. However, her "before" bedroom was bland and boring. It didn't reflect her fabulous personality in the least. She asked me to create a glamorous and luxurious bedroom for her.
BEFORE:
AFTER:
The highlight of this room is the wallpaper from Thibaut, which we used generously throughout the room. To hide any doors (aside from the entrance door, which we replaced with a gorgeous, carved wooden door), we removed all door trims and wallpapered the doors, carefully matching the design of the wallpaper. This makes the doors disappear and the room look larger.
My client wanted more lighting in her bedroom. We replaced the ceiling fan with a crystal chandelier, installed recessed lights into the ceiling above the bed, and flanked the headboard with swing arm lamps on both sides. Every light is on a dimmer.
The tufted headboard is upholstered in a neutral-colored velvet and accented with brass nailheads. Silk throw pillows with embroidery pick up the colors of the wallpaper. The arched windows are dressed with motorized silk draperies which my client can open and close with the touch of a button.

Pantone's 2015 Color of the Year: Marsala
If you only think of a small town in Sicily or a wine that comes from that region when you think of Marsala, it is time to add "Pantone's Color of the Year 2015" to your vocabulary.
Each December, Pantone annoints a color as the latest trend that is supposed to resonate with consumers around the globe. Marsala, which is a rich reddish brown hue, is the chosen color for 2015. We already have started to see clothing designers and Hollywood stars embrace this color. It is just a matter of time before furniture stores and home goods stores fill their stores with this color.
This year's chosen color is quite a change from the bright colors of the past few years: Radiant Orchid in 2014, Emerald green in 2013, and Tangerine Tango in 2012. Marsala is a warm color with a natural earthiness to the shade. In a matte finish, Marsala looks organic; in a sheen finish, it looks glamorous and luxurious.
Being a more neutral color, Marsala will look appropriate and current on large furniture pieces much longer than the bright colors of the past few years, which were more appropriate as accent colors (i.e. pillows, throws). I happen to really like this rich reddish brown color, especially in a sheen finish. If you like this color as much as I do, you might want to take advantage of the plethora of Marsala-colored items that will be available in stores at a wide range of price points.
What color is your pick of the year for 2016?
