Before & After
Glamorous 1920's Hollywood Bedroom

The 1920s gave us the Jazz Age and the start of Hollywood's "Golden Age".  Recently, a client in her late 30s asked me to design for her a Master Bedroom reminiscent of this epoch, yet updated for modern times. To recreate that glamorous feeling, I was drawn to a color combination of ice blue, taupe, and silver. For accessories I brought in mirrored tables, a crystal chandelier, as well as luxurious silk and velvet fabrics.

The metallic wallpaper from Harlequin instantly sets the tone: luxurious silver metallic floral design on an ice blue background. The shimmer of the wallpaper makes this bedroom look glamorous and provides depth and texture. I carried the metallic tone of the wallpaper throughout the room: nickel plated nailhead trim on the velvet upholstered headboard, nickel plated side tables with mirrored tops, shiny silk curtains, taupe shag rug, and a nickel plated crystal chandelier. The careful selection of curved shapes (for the headboard, the side tables, and the chandelier) reinforces this bedroom's feminine touch.

We carried the reflective glass and crystal theme all the way through the smallest details, such as knobs and decorative pieces.

My favorite sweets at Austrian Christmas markets

Last week, I flew to Vienna to surprise my father for his 75th birthday celebration. Happy Birthday, Dad! The city is still being decorated for the holiday season, but the Christmas markets are already in full swing. The history of Christmas markets goes back to the Late Middle Ages. Today, the biggest one in Vienna is located in front of City Hall, but there are many more spread throughout Vienna and Austria.

At Christmas markets, you can purchase hand-made sweets and crafts, and socialize with your friends over mulled wine. Among my favorite Austrian holiday sweets are Vanillekipferl, which are butter cookies made with ground almonds and vanilla sugar. They are delicious and taste best a few days after baking, but I can rarely wait that long!

Vanillekipferl

Ingredients:
Cookies:
2 1/8 cups all-purpose flour
1 pinch salt
7 tablespoons unsalted butter
1/2 cup confectioners' sugar
1 egg
3 teaspoons vanilla sugar
1 1/4 cups ground almonds
Topping:
6 tablespoons confectioners' sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla sugar

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Cut the butter into pieces the size of small peas and mix in with your finger tips.
  • Mix the confectioners' sugar, the egg, the vanilla sugar, and ground almonds into the flour mixture. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and place it in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.
  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Divide the dough into several parts. Roll each piece of dough into a log approximately 1/2" thick. Cut the logs into 1" pieces, and bend the pieces into crescent shapes (just like croissants). Place the kipferl on the baking sheet (not too close to each other) and chill them for 15 minutes in the refrigerator.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until the edges are golden brown, 10-15 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool slightly.
  • For the topping, combine confectioners' sugar and vanilla sugar and toss to mix.
  • While still warm (no more than 3 minutes after you removed them from oven), carefully remove kipferl from baking sheet and dip them in the sugar mixture to coat.
In a closed container, these Vanillekipferl can last for 6 weeks, but not in my home.

I wish you and your family happy holidays!
