Utilizing Positive Perceptions
In managing any aspect of our life, we need to first contemplate where we are at and where we wish to be. We can easily make changes if we give some thought to our own perception of a situation. Perception is our vantage point; how we understand the situation and the judgments we make about the people involved including ourselves. In a quiet space it's helpful to ask ourselves what we think about our bodies, ourselves and what feelings drive our behavior.
Thoughts are things. They have great power and influence on how our lives play out. While that's an incredible amount of responsibly for anyone to accept, the good news is that if we can change our thoughts, our experience will change as well. We are in charge. Sonia Choquette stated, "The universe will fill your cup -- if you carry a big cup, a little cup, or a thimble!" The choice is ours.

Surgeon's Corner
Your Success is Our Success Written by Dr. Kevin Rothchild
I am often asked about our follow-up schedule and the planned visits after surgery; be it the gastric bypass procedure, the lap band, or the sleeve gastrectomy. Patients are often shocked to hear that we would like to see our patients indefinitely. We have a routine schedule of a follow-up visit at one week, 3 weeks, 9 weeks, and every six months for the first 2 years after surgery. After that time if all things are going well, we usually will space out the visits to make them annual. Why so many visits? Well, among other things, we like to see how well you are doing! One of the most important aspects of a Bariatric program is the long term follow-up--it allows us to make sure that patients are getting the most out of their surgery and having sustained results. Numerous studies have shown that patients who return for consistent follow-up have more consistent and overall more significant weight loss. Find out more |

What surgery did you have?
I had Gastric Bypass (Roux-en-Yy).
What is the best thing about your weight loss, and what can you do now that you werent able to do before?
Now I can enjoy all of the outdoor activities Colorado has to offer with my wife and son without gasping for air, and without all of the knee and back pain that used to follow. We hunt, ski, mountain bike and hike together, and now I look behind me to see if my son is keeping up. I also enjoy how much my interaction with others has changed. I feel like I am taken more seriously at work now. It is almost as if people thought I couldn't possibly succeed in the tasks put in front of me if I couldn't even control my own weight. Now this isn't a factor for them or me.

Incorporating a Fitball into your Exercise Routine
Exercising with a fitball can have several advantages, helping you get the most out of your workout. A fitball not only serves as an exercise bench or chair, but it also helps to improve balance and core strength. The round shape of the ball naturally throws off the body's balance. To keep stable, extra muscles not frequently used, must be recruited to maintain stability. This in turn, increases the body's ability to compensate in unbalanced situations. Fitballs also target the body's core muscles. Core strength is crucial in preventing injuries and fatigue so increasing strength can be very beneficial. Exercising on a fitball forces the body to use stabilizing muscles that increase the body's core strength. Next time you are working out, incorporate a few exercises using the fitball and begin to see the benefits fitballs offer.
