WISHing You Well
An informative health communique for our patients and their families
Issue No. 14, Summer 2011

Greetings!

We are always looking at how we can improve our service to you. Over the past year our patients have told us that they would like even quicker access to their doctor. In response, we are actively searching to add a new doctor to our team. In the meantime, we are making some intermediate adjustments to hold open more same day appointments.  We want to thank our patients for their patience as we work through our growth spurt.

Migraine Headaches: A Real Pain for Women

Jason P. Krutsch, M.D.

Director, Interventional Pain Management

Migraine HeadachesThough common headaches can be very painful and are often just annoying, they are usually manageable and go away with proper attention.  Migraines, however, can be a persistent, crippling debilitation that significantly interrupts the lives of sufferers.  Women tend to suffer three times more often than men.  Read more about migraines and a surprising treatment you might expect to see only in cosmetology setting.

Sleepless NightAaaah, nothing is more refreshing than a good night's sleep. On the other hand, there are few things more frustrating than not being able to get or stay asleep. Not only is it maddening, but if long sleepless nights are a chronic problem, both your mental and physical health can be affected. Read more about what contributes to sleeplessness and how you can improve your "sleep hygiene".

Nothing so Irritable as Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Stephen R. Freeman, M.D.

Associate Professor, Gastroenterology

 Stomach ache

So often people have problems with digestion and simply just deal with  the discomfort.  It is very easy for many physicisans to pass over symptoms and not ask for more details about a common condition called irritable bowel syndrome.  Be informed before you go to see your primary care doctor and partner in your care.

The Fallout from Mammography Guidelines: Fewer MDs Recommending and Fewer Women Getting Screened

Lara Hardesty, M.D.

Chief, Breast Imaging

You may remember hearing in Novemer of 2009 that the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force issued a change in its recommendations for h ow frequently women should get mammograms. A year later, we ask "how has screening behavior been affected since the new recommendations?"

Dr. Lara Hardesty, Chief of Breast Imaging recently conducted two studies to get an idea of whether those recommendations had an effect on how practitioners should counsel patients and on the number of women that get screening.  She presented her findings at a major National Radiology Conference last month to an audience very eager to learn more about the effect of the recommendations. New Mover Starts Out a Healthy Winner

Bike winner
Marion and Gary Trundell

New Denver-ite, Marion Trundell, found out that taking care of your health really does make you a winner. After she and her husband relocated to Colorado from upstate New York to be closer to her children and grandchildren, they received a mailer about UCH primary care as part of a new mover campaign. That campaign included a chance to win a new bike to encourag new residents to be pro-active about their health.  When Mrs. Trundell made an appointment as a new patient at WISH, she brought along the mailer to enter for her chance at the new bike. Now, she is a double winner! She not only found a new medical home that will partner with her to maintain good health, she also has a shiny new bike to ride with her husband and grandchildren.  She has not owned a bike since she was six years old. Her husband bikes and she will start at 68. Roll on Trundells! And congratulations!

Enjoy the summer. Be safe. And be well.

Warm Regards,
