HHM OIL & GAS GROUP ADVANCES LANDOWNER PROTECTION INITIATIVES

HHM's oil and gas law practice group recently helped organize a new group of Lordstown-area landowners who want to make the most of their mineral rights opportunities. The Lordstown Regional Landowners Group seeks to negotiate collectively with Halcon Resources, a Texas energy company that recently bought mineral rights to over 30,000 acres of land in the region. Halcon wants to amend the decades-old leases to allow for drilling in the Utica Shale, and the landowners want to secure protection and fair compensation in exchange for the amendments. - Covelli Centre Forum: More than 1,000 local landowners heard advice from HHM lawyers at a November event organized by Buckeye Mineral Development. Presenters were ALAN WENGER, THOMAS CAREY, STEPHEN KOCON and GINA STRICKLAND.
- Columbiana Panel: Wenger was part of a November panel discussion, sponsored by the Columbiana Chamber of Commerce, on oil & gas issues.
- Columbus Seminar: Wenger spoke on oil and gas law in mid-November at an Ohio State Bar Association seminar for general practice lawyers.

BOETCHER, L'ITALIEN COVER EMPLOYMENT ISSUES IN SALEM CHAMBER PRESENTATION
HHM attorneys MARTIN J. BOETCHER and SHAWNA L. L'ITALIEN led a September seminar on employment issues for members and guests of the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce. The lawyers addressed the advantages of and recommended content for such manuals, and also covered employee termination issues. SHIRLEY CHRISTIAN, president of the Mahoning County Bar Association, spearheaded a November news conference about the association's position on the consolidation of Youngstown Municipal Court. The association believes the court can operate efficiently with two judges instead of three. Joining Christian at the briefing was attorney Scott Cochran, former association president and chair of its consolidation committee. The event generated broad news coverage, including these stories by the Vindicator, WKBN-TV, WFMJ-TV, Business Journal and Tribune Chronicle.

HHM LAWYERS GROW BEARDS TO RAISE AWARENESS, FUNDS FOR CANCER RESEARCH
Eight HHM lawyers grew beards as part of "Movember," a global movement to promote awareness and start conversations about men's prostate cancer. Participants include PATRICK K. WILSON, MATTHEW G. VANSUCH, JESS T. ENYEART, FREDERICK S. COOMBS III, ALAN D. WENGER, MARTIN J. BOETCHER, GEORGE P. MILLICH JR. and STEPHEN P. KOCON. The lawyers are asking clients and friends to donate to Man Up Mahoning Valley, a local foundation that advances prostate cancer research and treatment in the Mahoning Valley. L'ITALIEN ELECTED TO LEAD SALEM KIWANIS
HHM attorney SHAWNA L. L'ITALIEN has been elected president of the Salem Kiwanis Club. She has been a member of the organization's board since 2008. The group meets on Thursdays at the Salem Community Center. L'Italien is also a member of the boards of the Charitable Foundation for Salem Community Hospital, Salem Sustainable Opportunity Development Center, Columbiana County Mental Health Clinic and United Community Scholarship Foundation.

HHM BACKS JA BANQUET, TRIBUTE TO
WOODMAN
HHM was among the major sponsors of Junior Achievement of the Mahoning Valley's 60th anniversary dinner, which featured a tribute to the late George B. Woodman, a long-time HHM attorney and JA volunteer and board member. HHM lawyer FREDERICK S. COOMBS III, a friend and colleague of Woodman, accepted the award on behalf of his family and was featured in a video tribute to him (see above). For all of its 60 years, JA's board has included a lawyer from HHM or one of its predecessor firms. KEVIN P. MURPHY is a JA director now, and Coombs and THOMAS G. CAREY are former directors.

DUTTON OPENS CONFERENCE
HHM attorney PAUL M. DUTTON, chairman of the William Swanston Charitable Fund, delivered the opening remarks for the fund's recent Innovations Conference, a day-long educational program for professionals who work with at-risk children. Dutton has been a member of the fund's board of trustees since 1980.
