God Has Made a Covenant with David and His Descendant - (Psalm 89:19-21)

Daily Praise
Then You spoke in a vision to Your holy one, and said: "I have given help to one who is mighty; I have exalted one chosen from the people. I have found My servant David; with My holy oil I have anointed him, with whom My hand shall be established; also My arm shall strengthen him."

Reading Notes
Here we see the recounting of the covenant God made directly with David and his descendants. God Himself, called David, "a man after God's own heart." The holy one spoken of here is a reference to the prophet Nathan who was a messenger for God. Nathan was the one who told David of the covenant God had made with him. Nathan had received God's instructions in a vision during the night. It's important to note the Hebrew manuscript in this section of scripture uses the phrase, "holy ones" meaning more than one. And many think this also refers to Samuel, who was led directly by God to anoint David king over Israel.

In addition, in the closing verses of this section we see two more promises given by God as part of His covenant. The phrase, "My hand shall be established" is an idiom referring to the covenant made by the Lord and this is followed with a promise God made to strengthen David. And historically we see that God had given David the strength and leadership to defeat the enemies of Israel and give the land peace and prosperity during his son Solomon's reign. Moreover, God promised that David's descendant would rule Israel, as king forever. And we know this promise to be a prophecy of Jesus Christ and His future reign over all the earth from Jerusalem.
