Reading Notes
This passage was written to comfort God's people, those who were in exile in Babylon. The city of Jerusalem had just fallen to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon because of the people's rebellion against God. Most of the people along with the best and brightest were taken captive to the land of the Chaldeans. However, not all as slaves, most of the people were relocated to live their normal lives in the areas around Babylon. This was to prevent them from coming together as a nation and rebellion against Nebuchadnezzar a second time. It was not uncommon for conquering nations to relocate people from one region to another. This was done to prevent the people from coming together, fueled by nationalistic pride and love for their homeland and bring about rebellion. If we look at this from God's perspective the people were in exile because of their rebellion toward God. The Lord had warned the people repeatedly and they ignored God. God, even sent prophets to warn them about Babylon, but they disregarded God and attacked His prophets.

God allowed Babylon to judge Israel, when the people rebelled and rejected God. The people were required by God to give the land rest every seven years this was called the Sabbath year. God would give the people abundant harvest in the sixth year and in the seventh year they were to let the land rest and forgive debts. However the people for four-hundred and ninety years refused to obey God. Instead, they took the abundance of the sixth year and planted again out of greed for more the seventh year. Therefore God allowed them to go into exile into Babylon for seventy years, which is the exact number of years the people stole from God. Therefore, the people now had no choice, but to trust in God and His word while they lived normal lives in Babylon. Trusting God, that as a nation they would again be restored. This should remind us how important it is for us today, that we place our faith in God's word because of our faith in Christ Jesus our Lord. We are waiting upon His timing and direction for our lives and as we do so, God will build in us strength and perseverance.
