The Book of Psalms
Through the Psalms
Old Testament
Who is Mightier than Our God! - (Psalm 89:8-10)

Daily Praise
O Lord God of hosts, who is mighty like You, O Lord? Your faithfulness also surrounds You. You rule the raging of the sea; when its waves rise, You still them. You have broken Rahab in pieces, as one who is slain; You have scattered Your enemies with Your mighty arm.

Reading Notes
The psalmist continues his praise of God and gives us examples of God's control over nature and man. Who can control the raging seas? God can! Who can conquer Egypt (Rahab) the mightiest nation of the time? God can! We can often get so caught up in the things of this world we can forget who God is, what He has done. We can also forget that God is the creator of all things. Because we deal with the things of this world, that can cause us to forget God is mightier than anything man can come up with and stronger than anything nature can display. And that is the point made here in these passages. The psalmist reminds us that God is not only the Author of creation, He alone is sovereign over all of creation. Moreover, His children have a special relationship with Him directly. The nation of Israel had a special covenant relationship with God, something the rest of the world at the time did not have.

In addition, they were called to be a nation of priests in the world. They were to tell the rest of the world about the true and living God of Israel. The same is true for us today. Through our faith in Jesus, we too have a relationship with God, and we too have a responsibility to spread the Gospel to those we meet and to help others with our time, talents and resources. Therefore, this psalm applies to us today as well as to those of ancient Israel.  Our God is Holy, and as the sovereign creator He is stronger than anything in nature or anything made by man. Therefore, our trust is firmly placed in Him alone. The implication of these passages and the surrounding verses is this. Since God is stronger than everything and everybody why would we place our trust in anything else? Why would we place our faith anywhere else? As followers of Christ, we have a firm foundation in the one the Bible tells us is the Author of creation, who is our God and Savior Christ Jesus our Lord.
