God May Chastise, But He Always Restores His Children - (Psalm 89:1)

I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever; With my mouth will I make known Your faithfulness to all generations.

Reading Notes
This psalm is titled, "A Contemplation of Ethan the Ezrahite." This was a descendant of Ezra and this psalm is meant as a meditation and remembrance of God's covenant with David and his descendants. This psalm is also a lament over the current condition of his country, her people and their faith in the Lord. All of which had been broken down and lay in ruins. The nation of Israel, much like our country today had turned its back on God and suffered the consequences. And this psalm serves as a reminder of the Lord's promise and covenant as well as it calls the people to turn back toward God. Moreover, there is a twofold observation within this psalm that is very important to us as children of God.

First the psalmist trust in the Lord! And despite his current circumstances, he sings praises to God and worships the Lord. Second the psalmist does not let his current circumstances dictate his theology. In other words he acknowledges that God's word is accurate and true. He understands the current situation is the result of the people's sin and not God's failure to keep His promise. The Lord warned the people not to reject Him and they rejected God anyways. And as a result, they are suffering as God told them they would. Moreover, the psalmist knows and understands this, but he also remembers and trust in God's promise of restoration. And despite their sins, God will do as He promised, and He will restore His people.
