Old Testament
Trials Test Faith, But God Removes Fear Through His Work in Our Lives - (Psalm 88:11-12)

Daily Praise
Shall Your lovingkindness be declared in the grave? Or Your faithfulness in the place of destruction? Shall Your wonders be known in the dark? And Your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?

Reading Notes
In these passages Heman is asking God a question. He is still in anguish, he still feels the pain and now He is challenging God with a question. Not so much to question God and His sovereignty, but for his own understanding. Heman is in a sense asking God to help him make sense of the suffering and its purpose. Heman's question affects not only himself, but the community at large. If God allows Heman to die then his voice will never again be able to praise God, to declare the faithfulness of the Lord. Heman see's part of his role has proclaiming God's goodness. So all who hear him will praise God and come to know the Lord. And if God lets him die Heman will no longer be able to carry out his God given calling of praising and proclaiming the goodness of the Lord. We too can feel the same thing when we are going through trials in our life. We can wonder where God is and why He is allowing pain into our lives.

This doubt and fear is part of what it means to be human. However, as Christians, we must remember our knowledge and perspective is different from the rest of the world who do not know Christ. First, we are saved and we know our real home is with the Lord and not here in this world. Second, we know that bad things happen because of the fallen world we live in and because of sin. Whether it's our sin, the sin of others or both. Therefore, we understand bad things happen because of the fallen nature of this dark world. However, what we may not know or fully understand is that faith is not mature faith until it has been tested by trials. Faith is not real in our lives until it is tested and proven by trials. It's only when God allows trials into our life that the true quality of our faith is known. And known not only to ourselves, but to those around us watching us live out our faith through the trials in our life.
