The Book of Psalms
Through the Psalms
Old Testament
Through Our Darkest Hour We Can Bare Our Hearts to God - (Psalm 88:4-7)

Daily Praise
I am counted with those who go down to the pit; I am like a man who has no strength, Adrift among the dead, Like the slain who lie in the grave, Whom You remember no more, And who are cut off from Your hand. You have laid me in the lowest pit, In darkness, in the depths. Your wrath lies heavy upon me, And You have afflicted me with all Your waves. Selah

Reading Notes
In these passages the psalmist continues to pour out his emotions and aguish to the Lord in prayer. The psalmist feels like God has abandoned him. He feels as though he is counted amongst those who are dead and remembered by God no more. However, we know that is not the case, and we know that because he is pouring out his feelings to the Lord Himself. The psalmist is talking directly to God. Therefore, we shouldn't pass over this too quickly, because this paints a beautiful picture for us of how, even during our deepest and darkest despair, we can pour out our hearts to God. We do not have to hide from God our true emotions. We should instead come before God exposing our entire heart to Him as we talk and pray with Him.

Here the psalmist feels like he is going down into the pit. This phrase was a reference to "Sheol" or the "place of the dead." He then confirms this thought for us as he further explains he feels like he is adrift amongst the dead. This shows his feeling of total separation from God, family, friends and society in general. The psalmist likens himself to one who has been cut off from God and that is something he just cannot bear. He feels circumstances have not only led him into the pit with the dead, but into the lowest, deepest and darkest corner of the pit. Therefore, he is crying out to God. He's calling for the Lord to reach down, pull him out of the pit and restore him. And more importantly restore his relationship with God. Because it's in the Lord whom we have true life and a purpose which leads to a more abundant life.
