The Book of Psalms
Through the Psalms
Old Testament
God Hears Us When We Cry Out to Him thru Christ - (Psalm 88:1-3)

Daily Praise
O Lord, God of my salvation, I have cried out day and night before You. Let my prayer come before You; Incline Your ear to my cry. For my soul is full of troubles, And my life draws near to the grave.

Reading Notes
This psalm has a complicated title. We're told it is a "song of the sons of Korah", set to "Mahalath Leannoth" and it is a "contemplation of Heman the Ezrahite." Heman the Ezrahite was a priest and a musician from the family of the Kohathites a descendant of Ezra. It was Heman who founded the Kohathite choir. The Kohathites were responsible for the care of the sanctuary and the Leannoth was an unknown musical instrument. Heman may have also have been one of the wisemen who helped counsel Solomon during his reign. This psalm was written as a prayer for help during a time of despondency and was meant as an individual lament during times of tribulation or personal trials.

This psalm opens with a great amount of emotion as the psalmist cries out to the Lord to hear his plea. These opening verses are a plea for the Lord to hear this prayer and bring it before His thrown. We can see the emotional turmoil and agony in the heart of the writer as he speaks of how his soul is full of trouble. So much so he feels himself dying and drawing nearer to the grave. Dear believer, of all people we should feel the most blessed! Because God not only hears our cries, our prayers and our praises, but we are also indwelt by the Holy Spirit who leads us and guides us as we grow in the knowledge of Jesus and His word. Moreover the Bible tells us in the book of Revelation that our prayers ascend before the very throne of God, like a sweet smelling incense before the Lord!
