God Has Chosen His City Above All Others - (Psalm 87:1-3)

Daily Praise
His foundation is in the holy mountains. The Lord loves the gates of Zion More than all the dwellings of Jacob. Glorious things are spoken of you, O city of God Selah

Reading Notes
God loves Jerusalem, it's His chosen city. It's the one place in all the world which God has chosen to make His own. And it will be the center of His worship during the Messianic age to come. During the one thousand year reign of Jesus, He will reign from Jerusalem. And when this period of time is up Jesus will usher in the new heavens and the new earth. Here in these passages when they speak of "His foundation is in the holy mountains" it's referring to the fact that God founded Jerusalem to be His own. Not because it was the largest city and not because it was the most sophisticated city. God chooses the humble things to bring to shame the proud and arrogant.

Therefore God chose Jerusalem in His sovereignty. It's the one place in the ancient world before the incarnation, death and resurrection of Christ where God met with His people. The term "gates of Zion" is also a poetic description of Jerusalem used throughout the Old Testament. The term not only includes the city, but the Temple of God as well. It is the place where God was to be worshipped before the advent of Christ. Moreover, this psalm is looking forward to the Messianic age of Jesus, which is quickly approaching. This is a time when all nations including those who are currently Israel's enemies will come to Jerusalem and worship Christ Jesus our Lord, bringing their gifts of worship and praise because of His kingship over all the earth.
