The Book of Psalms
Through the Psalms
Old Testament
As Children and Servants of God We Can Turn to Him - (Psalm 86:16-17)

Daily Praise
Oh, turn to me, and have mercy on me Give Your strength to Your servant, ad save the son of Your maidservant. Show me a sign for good, that those who hate me may see it and be ashamed, because You, Lord, have helped me and comforted me.

Reading Notes
Here we see David in these verses acknowledging himself as not only a servant of the Lord; but the son of a woman who was also a maidservant of the Lord. In ancient times a servant born in the household often received more favor than one brought into the household from elsewhere. Moreover, it shows David's relationship with God. He is part of the family of God and being a servant of the Lord would mean that David is also representing God to the people he leads and watches over. David is asking God for an indication that God is pleased with him. What David wants confirmation on is that he, as a servant of the Lord, is acting correctly before the eyes of God and is following God's will and not his own. What David is asking for, serves several purposes.

Moreover, he is asking in order to ensure that he not only does God's will, but that in doing so, God will receive all the glory. This will do several things, first, it reveals the true and living God to David's enemies, thereby making them ashamed of their actions. And by doing so they learn the God of Israel is the only true and living God and not their false idols and deities. Secondly, it also strengthens and comforts David and the people he leads. It shows the people that God is for them and not against them, which also serves to strengthen their relationship with God. By turning to God David helps reassure the people that God is on their side. And finally, just as comforting words from a family member help to relieve suffering and strengthen family bonds, so too a sign or confirmation from God strengthens the relationship God has with His children who follow Him.
