Bible Word of the Day
Bible Vocabulary
City of David, Jerusalem (Old City of Jerusalem)
Meaning The phrase "City of David" refers to the city of Jerusalem, and more specifically to the oldest part of the city. Contrary to public rhetoric during the time of ancient Israel and King David there was no such thing as Palestinians. Instead the entire land was inhabited by many tribes collectively called the Canaanites. These tribes were the descendants of a man named Canaan. Canaan was the son of Ham and the grandson of Noah. And the city of Jerusalem was owned and built by one of these tribes called the Jebusites. Many Bible scholars also think the Jebusites may have intermarried with the race of giants in the land, and they were a people of large stature.
David in his conquest of the land, assaulted and captured the city of the Jebusites. Which at that time was called the "Fortress of Zion." The Jebusites believed the fortress to be impenetrable, however David and his men found a way into the city and defeated the Jebusites. The fortress became the personal home of King David and the royal family. What we know as Jerusalem today was built up around this fortress. Today the "City of David" is also called the "Old City." Both David and Solomon were buried there. Jerusalem is also a special city in God's eyes. God said of King David, "David is a man after my own heart." This was because despite David's faults, he dearly loved and followed the Lord. Not only were David and Israel, God's chosen people, but Jerusalem is God's chosen city. And because of that, God several thousand years ago told us Jerusalem would be a "cup of trembling" for all the world in the Last Days. This is because Satan's desires is to usurp the things of God and that includes the city of God.
"And the king and his men went to Jerusalem against the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, who spoke to David, saying, 'You shall not come in here; but the blind and the lame will repel you,' thinking, 'David cannot come in here.' Nevertheless David took the stronghold of Zion (that is, the City of David). Now David said on that day, 'Whoever climbs up by way of the water shaft and defeats the Jebusites (the lame and the blind, who are hated by David's soul), he shall be chief and captain.' Therefore they say, 'The blind and the lame shall not come into the house.' Then David dwelt in the stronghold, and called it the City of David. And David built all around from the Millo and inward." (Book of 2nd Samuel 5:6-9)
"Then the inhabitants of Jebus said to David, 'You shall not come in here' Nevertheless David took the stronghold of Zion (that is, the City of David). Now David said, 'Whoever attacks the Jebusites first shall be chief and captain.' And Joab the son of Zeruiah went up first, and became chief. Then David dwelt in the stronghold; therefore they called it the City of David." (Book of 1st Chronicles 11:5-7)
