New Testament
God Promises He Gives Life and Breath to All Things - (Acts 17:24-25)

Bible Promise
I give life and breath to all things.

Bible Verse
God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands. Nor is He worshiped with men's hands, as though He needed anything, since He gives to all life, breath, and all things.

Reading Notes
These passages are part of the Apostle Paul's speech to the men of Athens who gathered at the Areopagus. The name Areopagus means "Ares Rock" and it was the name of a hill located near the Acropolis. There was a civil court located there by the same name. It was kind of an appeals court where men would meet to handle civil cases as well as discuss and debate new ideas and philosophies. The Athenians believed in the supernatural and they had statues and monuments to gods of all sorts, in and around the city. And just in case they missed one they had a monument to the "unknown god." They were so afraid they would offend some god they did not know about that they made a statue just in case.

Paul understood the hearts of men. This was the wisdom he learned from Jesus and God's word. Paul then sought to understand the culture and used this as an opportunity to tell the men of Athens about Christ Jesus our Lord. So Paul went to the Areopagus to explain who Jesus is to the people. And in doing so he showed how Jesus was the Creator who gives life to all, and by whom all things are created and held together. Paul explained that the one whom they did not know was the true and living God of heaven. Paul then explained that they too could have a relationship with the true and living God. And this is still true for us today. God is calling us and waiting for those who do not know Him to come to Him through Christ Jesus our Lord.
