The Book of Psalms
Bible Promises
Old Testament
God Promises He Will Look After Us Through Trials - (Psalm 23:5)

Bible Promise
I will anoint you with oil so your cup overflows.

Bible Verse
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over.

Reading Notes
In the ancient near east honored guest were anointed with perfumed oils to show not only their status as special guest; but also to show the love the host had for them. This verse uses that same imagery and language here to show just how much God loves us. His love for us is so great, that God has given us joy in Christ despite living among the enemies of God. A joy which fills our hearts and defies our worldly circumstances. A joy that comes from knowing that God loves us so much that He Himself stepped out of eternity and took on humanity in the incarnation of Christ. And a joy which comes from knowing that God did this for no other reason than to save us from the eternal consequences of our sin. God did this in order that we may spend eternity with Him.

Moreover, the Bible tells us that God chose us to be in Christ before the foundations of the world were laid in place. And Because of His love for us, God Himself made it possible for mankind to reconcile ourselves back to a Holy God. In addition, God's provisions for our salvation, for the eternity that awaits us are more than abundant, not to mention the joy we have here and now in Christ Jesus our Lord. In this verse the lavish treatment of the honored guest is indicative of the loving care God has for His people and the special privilege we have as children of God through our faith in Christ. Today we have the joy of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit who is our guarantee of eternal life to come. But soon we will see Jesus face to face as we live with Him forevermore.
