Bow down Your ear, O Lord, hear me; For I am poor and needy. Preserve my life, for I am holy; You are my God; save Your servant who trusts in You.

Reading Notes
This psalm is an individual psalm of David's and it's the only psalm in Book III of the Psalms, which has David's name in the opening title. This is a personal prayer of David to God during a time of distress and persecution. As the prayer goes on we see the change in David's heart as the joy and praise of God relieves his distress and brings him comfort and confidence in the Lord. In these opening verses David is giving us the proper perspective of our current human condition which is poor, lowly and in need of God in our lives. The need we all have to trust in the Lord and let God lead our lives in His direction and not ours. In this case David is asking God to preserve his life in the face of an attack by his enemies. However, what is most interesting is David's statement "for I am holy." For our purposes here we may also read it as, "My relationship with you oh God is not broken!"

David is keenly aware of his sin and his need for God! David is not saying he is holy by his own accord. What David is proclaiming is that by God's grace and mercy and because his covenant relationship with God is still intact and not broken he is holy before God. Therefore, because of that relationship David can call on God as we see him doing so here. This so important for us to remember! We not only have this same relationship with God ourselves, but more so because we can call God Father! And like David our relationship has nothing to do with ourselves, but everything to do with our God, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Because it is Jesus, the very God of Heaven who stepped out of eternity, took on humanity and bore the shame of the cross to restore our relationship with God. A relationship broken by sin and beyond our ability to repair. Therefore, Jesus Himself took on our punishment, thereby repairing the damage sin had brought to our relationship with God.
